South Africa women begin well

Laura Wolvaardt did everything except win the Player-of-the-Match award, as South Africa women posted a resounding eight-wicket victory over India in the first One-Day International  here on Sunday. Even though 10% of tickets was put on sale, spectators were few in the massive structure. That did not deter the teams, as they engaged in spells of lively play, with South Africa having the last laugh, in the warmth of the afternoon sun, when the Indian enthusiasm looked to have waned. Captain Sune Luus said she was proud of her team for beating India in India by such a big margin, and setting the tempo for the five-match series. Opting to bowl, South Africa turned the tide after India had reached 101 for three in 25 overs. Skipper Mithali Raj anchored the Indian innings nicely with 50 off 85 balls. Harmanpreet Kaur was in good form, making 40 off 41 balls. She looked good for more before an ambitious off-drive saw her getting caught on the boundary. Africa’s confirmed COVID-19 cases pass 3.96 mln: Africa CDC

Video Player Close ADDIS ABABA, March 8 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa has reached 3,963,706 as of Monday noon, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said. African countries were facing several challenges, as they were in bad need of vaccines, Africa CDC Director John Nkengasong said on Sunday. Meanwhile, "our population has begun to face what is called pandemic fatigue. We have been doing this for one year and people are getting tired," he added. He also emphasized the need to strictly adhere to public health precautionary measures. The Africa CDC, a specialized healthcare agency of the African Union (AU), said the death toll related to the pandemic stood at 105,722, while 3,540,989 patients across the continent had recovered from the disease. The most affected countries in terms of the number of confirmed positive cases include South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and Ethiopia, the agency said. Interview: Africa CDC chief commends China’s vaccine support

Video Player Close ADDIS ABABA, March 8 (Xinhua) -- The Director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) John Nkengasong has commended China's efforts in helping African countries access COVID-19 vaccines. Speaking to Xinhua on Sunday, Nkengasong said the continent has set a minimum target of at least 60 percent of COVID-19 vaccine immunization. "We appreciate what China is doing on the continent, and we call on others to join this effort," Nkengasong said. According to the latest figures from the Africa CDC, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa has reached 3,955,148 as of Sunday, while the death toll related to the pandemic reached 105,490. The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the 55-member African Union, said that some 3,533,574 COVID-19 patients across the continent have recovered from the disease so far.
