June 22, 2014. Jackson Palmer, a self-identified "average geek," is high in the stands at a Nascar race at the Sonoma Raceway in California. He is an Australian man in his 20s. He has zero interest in racing. Never in his wildest dreams did he imagine it would come to this. He surveys the scene. Below him: a tremendous crowd. The overwhelming blare of engines. Hurtling round at tremendous speeds: the #98 Moonrocket, a high-performance racing car. No different from the other cars on the track, except for one crucial detail. On the bonnet of the car: a dog . A Shiba Inu, more commonly known as a "Shibe," the dog made famous in the Doge meme that was popular in 2013. Emblazoned on top: the word " DOGECOIN " in all caps. Below: "digital currency". Palmer describes the situation using words like "crazy," "surreal" and "nuts." He remembers this moment as a "reality check." Dogecoin was a tweet, then it was a cryptocurrency worth money in the real world. Six months later, he … [Read more...] about Dogecoin: Inside the meme that became an $80 billion cryptocurrency

The University of California (UC) system announced last month that it had been hit with a massive data breach. The locale was a third-party file-transfer application called Accellion. UC was just one of the victims of the international cyberattack, which may have afflicted roughly 100 institutions , also including Stanford Medical School, the Universities of Maryland, Colorado and Miami and Yeshiva University in New York. How much data was stolen remains unknown. The University of California wrote in a FAQ that the compromised information includes names, addresses, telephone numbers, birth dates, Social Security numbers and bank account information for “employees and their dependents and beneficiaries, retirees and their beneficiaries, students and their families,” and possibly other people with UC connections. Prior to the November election, we were virtually alone when we wrote on how Section 15 of California Proposition 24 should not have … [Read more...] about Massive school data breach shows we need better privacy policies
The recent Russian “SolarWinds” cyberattacks on supply chains and the Chinese “Hafnium” cyberattacks on Microsoft servers underscore the high degree of vulnerability that inadequately protected information technology can generate. Establishing a resilient capability to deal with these and other types of cyberattacks, such as ransomware that freezes a user’s operations while holding its data at risk, will require a substantially increased number of talented cybersecurity operators. A focused effort that increases the cybersecurity capabilities of the National Guard would significantly improve the nation’s ability to deal with such cyberattacks. One of the most important national sectors, yet least effectively protected against cyber intrusions, are state, city and local governments — which the National Guard is statutorily positioned to protect. Similarly, in the context of natural disasters such as hurricanes or tornados, the National Guard regularly works with critical … [Read more...] about Expanding the role of the National Guard for effective cybersecurity

It was like something out of a rom-com. In August 2017, Kabir Sunmon and Hester LaZard met in the parking lot of a Los Angeles grocery store. Two months later, they were married. They had plans to travel abroad and build a family in the US. But now, nearly four years in, the rom-com has turned into an unending drama as Sunmon, who is Nigerian, continues to wait to see if he’ll get his marriage-based green card so he and his wife can finally travel and live freely without worrying about his immigration status every day. “If I am being sincere with you, I am living in fear. If I am losing this now, if I get a negative result, I will have to go back to my country. And I wouldn’t tell my wife to live with me in Lagos, because everybody knows the United States is the land of opportunity,” Sunmon said. Sunmon is among hundreds of thousands of others waiting in limbo as the effects of COVID-19 and restrictive Trump-era policies continue to slow visa processing to a crawl. … [Read more...] about Trump Policies And COVID Have Left Immigrant Couples Trying To Get Marriage-Based Visas In Limbo
