‘It’s a different world under the microscope’: HSA’s crack team can tell authentic documents from the fake

· May 26, 2019 ·

SINGAPORE: If you were to very carefully forge a signature on a cheque, what are the chances the crime would be discovered? If it passes through the doors of the forensic scientists at the Health Sciences Authority (HSA), then the chances are very high - possibly as high as 100 per cent. That is because within HSA, which houses Singapore’s forensic capabilities, is a team that is trained to examine documents for forgery and other crimes. READ: Man forged documents including NUS degree to get work, snagging 38 jobs in 4 years The team handles 80 to 100 cases a year, the majority of which come from law enforcement agencies like the Singapore Police Force who submit material they need examined. Among the evidence that needs to be examined could be a degree certificate that is thought to be fake, potentially counterfeit bank notes, or even “O$P$” splashed on a wall in a loanshark investigation. Other than the police, the team, which has eight members, also counts law firms … [Read more...] about ‘It’s a different world under the microscope’: HSA’s crack team can tell authentic documents from the fake

World Restaurant Awards to be reformatted for TV next year

· October 28, 2019 ·

Chef Kobus van der Merwe’s South African restaurant Wolfgat was named Restaurant of the Year at the World Restaurant Awards 2019. Image: AFP/Thomas Samson via AFP Relaxnews After its splashy launch in Paris early this year, organizers of the World Restaurant Awards have confirmed plans to scrap the red carpet gala in 2020 and instead reformat the awards as a televised event. That’s according to Bloomberg food writer Richard Vines who first broke the news via Twitter this week. The @worldrestawards will not be holding a ceremony in 2020 and will instead pursue evolving the awards format into a television series: "We believe extending our reach beyond a specific place, audience or moment in time is key to our continued progress," the organizers say. — Richard Vines (@Richardvines) October 22, 2019 When the event was first announced, it was pitched as an alternative to the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards, an influential ranking that has been criticized for being … [Read more...] about World Restaurant Awards to be reformatted for TV next year

The Singaporean with the global restaurant empire – just not for nudists

· August 6, 2019 ·

In the Singapore dining scene, where consumer options abound and restaurants open and shut like automatic doors, Loh Lik Peng has remained cavalierly buoyant for the last 15 years, with restaurants like Burnt Ends, Pollen, Majestic, Salted & Hung, Meatsmith and Zen all under his Unlisted Collection umbrella. READ: At S$450 per head, this might be Singapore's most expensive restaurant And it’s not just here that the multi-hyphenate has opened much-hyped, award-winning restaurants and hotels – he’s also flying the Singapore flag high in London, Sydney and Dublin, with acclaimed properties in heritage buildings. His approach to coming up with winning concepts is at once easy and difficult: He believes you’re limited only by your imagination. “There’s no such thing as a saturated market. People who say that are just lazy. Because they are thinking of the same concept that everyone else is doing,” the 47-year-old declared. UK woman dies after metal drinking straw impaled her through eye: Report

· July 10, 2019 ·

BOURNEMOUTH: A woman in the UK reportedly died after a metal drinking straw impaled her left eye and brain during a fall. Elena Struthers-Gardner, 60, was carrying a mason-jar style glass with a 10-inch stainless steel straw in the middle of the screw top lid when she collapsed, reported the Daily Echo on Tuesday (Jul 9) citing a judicial inquiry. The incident happened at her home in Broadstone village on Nov 22 last year, the report said. Struthers-Gardner was taken to a local hospital after her partner found her “lying on her front” and making “gurgling sounds” near the kitchen. She died from traumatic brain injury the following day, the report added. “I went to the kitchen door and could see Lena lying on her front at the doorway between the den and the kitchen,” the Daily Echo quoted a statement by her wife, Mandy Struthers-Gardner, that was read out by the coroner. “Her glass cup was lying on the floor still intact and the straw was still in the jar," it added. … [Read more...] about UK woman dies after metal drinking straw impaled her through eye: Report

Teenager catches toddler who fell from second-floor apartment in Turkey

· June 27, 2019 ·

ISTANBUL: A CCTV camera has captured dramatic footage showing the moment a toddler was caught by a teenager after she fell off a window of a second-floor apartment in Turkey. Algerian citizen Feuzi Zabaat, 17, who was working at a frame workshop along the same street, noticed two-year-old Syrian Doha Muhammed, who reportedly went to the window of her home while her mother was cooking in the kitchen. After noticing the girl, Zabaat then positioned himself underneath the window of the apartment and caught the girl before she could hit the ground. She survived with no injuries. Zabaat was hailed a hero by the girl's family, who rewarded him with 200 Turkish Liras (US$35) for his good deed. "I caught the child mid-air before she hit the ground. I did what was necessary for the love of Allah," Zabaat said. … [Read more...] about Teenager catches toddler who fell from second-floor apartment in Turkey
