Tougher restrictions on drivers using mobile phones, including extending the ban to hands-free devices, should be considered, MPs have said. The transport select committee said using any type of mobile phone while driving had potentially catastrophic consequences. The MPs called for more severe penalties “commensurate with the risks”, as road deaths linked to phone use have risen steadily over the past decade. In 2017, there were 773 casualties on Britain’s roads, including 43 deaths and 135 serious injuries, in crashes in which the driver was using a mobile phone. But rates of enforcement had dropped by more than two-thirds since 2011, the committee said, as it called on the government to work with police to make better use of technology and deter offenders. Although penalties for using a handheld mobile phone while driving were doubled in 2017 – to six points on a licence and a £200 fine – the committee said they should be reviewed and potentially … [Read more...] about Ban hands-free phones in cars after rise in road deaths, MPs suggest

Poland is drawing up new regulations to punish use of the phrase “Polish death camps” in reference to wartime Nazi concentration camps on Polish soil, the justice minister, Zbigniew Ziobro, has said. Poland has long sought to eliminate the misleading phrase from historical and newspaper accounts since it suggests the country, which was occupied by Nazi Germany during the second world war, was responsible for concentration camps on its territory. The Nazis operated many of their most infamous death camps, such as Auschwitz-Birkenau, Sobibór and Treblinka complexes, in occupied Poland rather than in Germany. “This will be a project that meets the expectations of Poles, who are blasphemed in the world, in Europe, even in Germany, that they are the Holocaust perpetrators, that in Poland there were Polish concentration camps, Polish gas chambers,” Ziobro told Polish radio station RMF. “Enough with this lie. There has to be responsibility,” he said. … [Read more...] about Poland plans to punish use of the phrase ‘Polish death camps’
Illegal mobile phone use by drivers is rising, according to new research that found 31% of motorists admitted to using a handheld phone behind the wheel compared with 8% in 2014. The survey by the RAC found that the proportion of drivers who confessed to sending a message or posting on social media rose from 7% to 19% over the same period, while 14% of motorists have taken photographs or videos with their phone while driving. The RAC believes a 27% fall in the number of full-time dedicated roads policing officers in England and Wales (excluding London) between 2010 and 2015 has left drivers with no fear that they will be caught for offences which are not detected by automatic cameras. The survey of 1,714 UK motorists for the RAC’s annual Report on Motoring found that 7% of those who admitted using a mobile while driving said they did it because they knew they would get away with it. Almost a quarter (23%) claimed it was an emergency, 21% said they needed information for their … [Read more...] about Illegal mobile phone use by motorists is increasing, says RAC

Car parts of the future could be made out of a surprising material. Wood. Researchers in Japan are working to create a strong material out of wood pulp that could replace steel parts in vehicles within a decade. Work is also charging ahead in the country to develop plastics that can withstand high temperatures, to replace metal for parts near the engine. These innovations are part of a wider industry push to make cars lighter. "There is a rush to try and cut as much weight as possible, especially on cars which will pollute more, like SUVs [sports utility vehicles] or pick-up trucks," says Paolo Martino, principal automotive components analyst at IHS Markit. Slimmer cars consume less fuel. The US Department of Energy says a 10% reduction in vehicle weight can improve fuel economy by up to 8%. Manufacturers also want to make electric models as light as possible so they can travel further on a single charge, and help resolve the battery "range anxiety" faced by car owners, Mr Martino … [Read more...] about Could wood pulp make cars lighter and more efficient?
