HONG KONG - Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said on Monday (March 8) that China’s planned changes to the electoral system could further delay a vote for the city’s legislature, but she was still uncertain on the timing. China’s Parliament, the National People’s Congress (NPC), is expected to approve on Thursday a resolution that will reduce democratic representation in Hong Kong institutions and vet any candidate for patriotism. The measures will tweak the size and composition of Hong Kong’s legislature and the committee selecting the chief executive further in favour of pro-Beijing figures. The electoral committee will also be given powers to select many of the legislators. BERLIN (AP) – Swiss voters narrowly approved on Sunday a proposal to ban face coverings, both the niqabs and burqas worn by a few Muslim women in the country and the ski masks and bandannas used by protesters. The measure will outlaw covering one’s face in public places like restaurants, sports stadiums, public transport or simply walking in the street. It foresees exceptions at religious sites and for security or health reasons, such as face masks people are wearing now to protect against COVID-19, as well as for traditional Carnival celebrations. Authorities have two years to draw up detailed legislation. Two Swiss cantons, or states, Ticino and St. Gallen, already have similar legislation that foresees fines for transgressions. National legislation will put Switzerland in line with countries such as Belgium and France that have already enacted similar measures. The practice of blackface, or using makeup to impersonate a dark-skinned character, has long been frowned upon as offensive due to its historical usage in caricatures and negative portrayals of black people. Yet, that's exactly what online video streaming service Toggle did on an episode of Chinese-language series "I Want To Be A Star". The episode saw actor Shane Pow dressing up as a black actor by putting on black makeup on his face and an afro wig. Unsurprisingly, reactions online have been overwhelmingly negative, with many netizens expressing disbelief and criticising the use of blackface as racist and offensive. On Twitter, user peachy keen (@bxbyqueen) suggested that a reason for the struggles of local television series is "blatant discrimination masked as jokes". Wyoming Republican Senator John Barrasso reiterated claims that undocumented people living in the United States will receive direct payments through the latest coronavirus relief package on Sunday, echoing a similar suggestion from Texas GOP Senator Ted Cruz over the weekend. The Senate passed a $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill on Saturday in a 50-49 vote along party lines. The bill will return to the U.S. House, where it initially passed one week earlier, for a second vote on Tuesday that is expected to see representatives approve the proposed legislation with amendments from the Senate. President Joe Biden could then sign the bill into law before the end of the upcoming week. In addition to extending increased unemployment benefits and distributing aid to state governments, the bill aims to dispense another round of economic stimulus payments to eligible Americans.
