States assail ‘bogus’ Texas bid to overturn US election at Supreme Court

· December 11, 2020 ·

WASHINGTON: Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin on Thursday (Dec 10) urged the US Supreme Court to reject a lawsuit filed by Texas and backed by President Donald Trump seeking to undo President-elect Joe Biden's election victory, saying the case has no factual or legal grounds and offers "bogus" claims. "What Texas is doing in this proceeding is to ask this court to reconsider a mass of baseless claims about problems with the election that have already been considered, and rejected, by this court and other courts," Josh Shapiro, Pennsylvania's Democratic attorney general, wrote in a filing to the nine justices. Texas filed the long-shot suit against the four election battleground states on Tuesday directly with the Supreme Court. It asked that the voting results in those states be thrown out because of their changes in voting procedures that allowed expanded mail-in voting during the coronavirus pandemic. Trump's campaign and his allies already have been spurned in … [Read more...] about States assail ‘bogus’ Texas bid to overturn US election at Supreme Court

Biden says halting COVID-19 will take hard work, as Trump stumps non-stop

· October 29, 2020 ·

WILMINGTON, North Carolina: Democrat Joe Biden reiterated on Wednesday (Oct 28) he will tackle the COVID-19 pandemic from Day 1 if elected president but warned there is no magic "switch" to end the pandemic, as Donald Trump insisted he will still win easily and dismissed his opponent as a Covid alarmist. Less than a week before decision day, Biden cast his presidential ballot in his home state of Delaware and met with health experts, as he fine-tuned his pandemic response plan, seeking to reassure voters that he would use science to fight the contagion. "Even if I win it's going to take a lot of hard work to end this pandemic," the former vice president said in Wilmington. "I'm not running on a false promise of being able to end this pandemic by flipping a switch," he added. "But what I can promise you is this: We'll start on Day 1 by doing the right thing. We'll let science guide our decisions." Biden, 77, continues to campaign cautiously ahead of next Tuesday, holding … [Read more...] about Biden says halting COVID-19 will take hard work, as Trump stumps non-stop

With six days left in race, Trump heads to Arizona and Biden delivers COVID-19 speech

· October 28, 2020 ·

LAS VEGAS/WILMINGTON: President Donald Trump will hold two campaign rallies on Wednesday (Oct 28) in the battleground state of Arizona, where polls show him narrowly trailing Democratic rival Joe Biden, as the White House race heads into its final six-day stretch. Biden, who has repeatedly criticised Trump for failing to contain the coronavirus pandemic, will receive a briefing from public health experts and deliver a speech near his home in Delaware on his plans to combat COVID-19 and protect Americans with pre-existing health conditions, his campaign said. Biden still leads Trump comfortably in national opinion polls in a race dominated by the pandemic, which has caused more than 225,000 US deaths, cost millions more their jobs and spurred a rush to vote early by many Americans looking to avoid health risks from exposure. The race is tighter in several battleground states where the election might be decided. Trump loses Wisconsin lawsuit in latest legal defeat

· December 12, 2020 ·

MADISON, Wisconsin: President Donald Trump lost a Wisconsin lawsuit on Friday (Dec 11) seeking to disqualify more than 221,000 ballots and overturn his loss to Democrat Joe Biden in the battleground state, the latest in a string of legal defeats. Reserve Judge Stephen Simanek ruled against every argument Trump made challenging ballots in the state's two largest counties, saying the election was properly administered and there was no wrongdoing as the president alleged. “The bottom line here is that the court should do everything to ensure that the will of the voters prevail,” the judge said. Trump planned to quickly appeal the ruling to the conservative-controlled Wisconsin Supreme Court, even though his chances there appear to be slim. Trump also has a federal lawsuit in Wisconsin where the judge could rule as soon as Friday. The Wisconsin Supreme Court court previously refused to hear Trump's state case before it went through the lower courts. A majority of justices have … [Read more...] about Trump loses Wisconsin lawsuit in latest legal defeat
