The police disciplinary hearing of two Toronto officers charged with misconduct after the high-profile gunpoint arrest of four black teens should consider racial profiling as a factor in the incident, the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) told a Toronto police disciplinary tribunal Wednesday. In a rare move, the OHRC has applied to participate in the police discipline process by attaining what’s called intervener status — a designation that would allow the commission to ensure “the complex issue of racial profiling is thoroughly analyzed by the tribunal,” said Sunil Gurmukh, the commission’s lawyer. “Racial profiling is part of systemic bias in many police forces,” Gurmukh said. “The commission will bring an important and distinct perspective to this case.” The application is being opposed by both the tribunal’s prosecutor and the officers, Toronto police Const. Adam Lourenco and Const. Scharnil Pais. The OHRC’s inclusion would “hijack” what’s intended to be an … [Read more...] about Human Rights Commission seeks to intervene in ‘Neptune Four’ case

Marco Muzzo wants damages reduced in lawsuit over drunk driving deaths
Lawyers for convicted killer drunk driver Marco Muzzo are arguing that the family of the three children and grandfather who died at Muzzo’s hands should not be entitled to more than a third of the damages they are seeking in a $25-million lawsuit . In a statement of defence for the deadly 2015 car crash in Vaughan, Muzzo and his family’s drywall business, which is also being sued, admit liability for the collision but say they want a trial for an assessment of the damages. They argue that the family of the victims should not be eligible to receive all of the damages they are seeking because Muzzo has already been punished by being imprisoned. “The plaintiffs’ damages, if any, should be reduced by the amount of any collateral benefits they received or are entitled to,” says the brief statement of defence, filed in Superior Court. “The plaintiffs are not entitled at law to recover punitive or exemplary damages in view of Muzzo’s criminal conviction and lengthy incarceration … [Read more...] about Marco Muzzo wants damages reduced in lawsuit over drunk driving deaths
Crossing the Divide
Tossing insults back and forth is easy. Insisting that you are speaking from facts and the other person is reciting fabrications feels right. But this isn’t dialogue. Words are being exchanged, but nothing is heard. No one is learning anything, not a bit of curiosity is being spurred, and certainly no one is changing anyone’s mind. Such stalemates only tend to intensify bad feelings on both sides. We can’t leave it like this. Our personal relationships and our democracy both depend on our capacity to talk to each other and to hear each other out. We don’t have to agree; we don’t even have to strive to meet in the middle. We do need to find out what matters to the other person, what drives their point of view, and they need to know the same about us. A starting point is to pull back and locate a set of facts you both can agree on. This is not a trivial exercise. Meaningful dialogue hinges on these reference points that can give us moments of repose together. Maybe you both agree … [Read more...] about Crossing the Divide
Coronavirus: Psychological fatigue could fuel trend of rule-breaking, say experts
As the pandemic draws out, psychological fatigue is setting in , resulting in more people flouting rules such as social distancing - a behavioural trend that encourages others to follow suit, said local experts. Associate Professor Leong Chan-Hoong, a psychologist at the Singapore University of Social Sciences' Centre for Applied Research, said the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on people's behaviour can be attributed to two main schools of thought. The first group tends to believe preventative measures like the circuit breaker are key in mitigating the spread of the disease, while the second group is more sceptical, especially as the strategies result in economic fallout, he added. The second group "tends to follow these rules as they are legally binding, without internalising the norms behind them. So, when psychological fatigue begins to set in, they start to flout the rules". "Therefore, for rules which are harder to enforce like social distancing, people realise that … [Read more...] about Coronavirus: Psychological fatigue could fuel trend of rule-breaking, say experts
