Nvidia nears deal to buy chip designer Arm for more than US$40 billion – sources

· September 13, 2020 ·

REUTERS: Nvidia Corp is close to a deal to buy British chip designer Arm Holdings from SoftBank Group Corp for more than US$40 billion (£31.26 billion) in a deal which would create a giant in the chip industry, according to two people familiar with the matter. A cash and stock deal for Arm could be announced as early as next week, the sources said. Nvidia is known for its graphics chips that power video games, but it has developed other markets including artificial intelligence, self-driving cars and data centers. Arm supplies the chip technology for virtually all mobile devices such as phones and tablets but is also expanding into processors for cars, datacenter services and other devices. The British company does not make chips. Instead it licenses out the underlying technology so others can make chips with it. It has previously collaborated with Nvidia. Last year Nvidia said it would make its chips work with processors from Arm to build supercomputers, deepening its … [Read more...] about Nvidia nears deal to buy chip designer Arm for more than US$40 billion – sources

Regulators Considered Extra Scrutiny Of Airplane Engine Before It Caught Fire Mid-Flight And Dropped Parts Over Colorado

· February 23, 2021 ·

Regulators had already considered mandating additional scrutiny on some Pratt & Whitney engines before one on a Boeing 777-200 fell apart mid-flight over the weekend. The preliminary investigation into the Hawaii-bound United Airlines flight, which conducted an emergency landing in Denver on Saturday, showed there was metal fatigue on one of the engine’s 22 fan blades, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators said late Monday night. The weakened blade is thought to have then interfered with and sliced a second blade. “A preliminary on-scene exam indicates damage consistent with metal fatigue,” NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said. (RELATED: Second Boeing Plane Fails Mid-Flight, Forcing Emergency Landing) Sumwalt added that Pratt & Whitney will examine the recovered blade at its factory on Tuesday alongside NTSB investigators. The safety agency’s ongoing investigation involves an examination of the engine, videos taken by passengers aboard and … [Read more...] about Regulators Considered Extra Scrutiny Of Airplane Engine Before It Caught Fire Mid-Flight And Dropped Parts Over Colorado
