2017 is set to be one of the hottest three years on record, provisional data suggests, confirming yet again a warming trend that scientists say bears the fingerprints of human actions. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said temperatures in the first nine months of this year were unlikely to have been higher than 2016, when there was a strong El Niño weather system, but higher than anything before 2015. Petteri Taalas, secretary general of the WMO, said: “The past three years have all been in the top three years in terms of temperature records. This is part of a long term warming trend. We have witnessed extraordinary weather, including temperatures topping 50C in Asia, record-breaking hurricanes in rapid succession in the Caribbean and Atlantic reaching as far as Ireland, devastating monsoon flooding affecting many millions of people and a relentless drought in East Africa.” He said further detailed scientific studies would be carried out, but that it was … [Read more...] about 2017 set to be one of top three hottest years on record

The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increased at record speed last year to hit a level not seen for more than three million years, the UN has warned. The new report has raised alarm among scientists and prompted calls for nations to consider more drastic emissions reductions at the upcoming climate negotiations in Bonn. “Globally averaged concentrations of CO2 reached 403.3 parts per million (ppm) in 2016, up from 400.00 ppm in 2015 because of a combination of human activities and a strong El Niño event,” according to The Greenhouse Gas Bulletin, the UN weather agency’s annual flagship report. This acceleration occurred despite a slowdown – and perhaps even a plateauing – of emissions because El Niño intensified droughts and weakened the ability of vegetation to absorb carbon dioxide. As the planet warms, El Niños are expected to become more frequent. The increase of 3.3 ppm is considerably higher than both the 2.3 ppm rise … [Read more...] about Global atmospheric CO2 levels hit record high
Fourteen of the 15 hottest years on record have occurred since 2000, according to the UN World Meteorological Organisation, as rising carbon emissions continue to trap heat and drive climate change. The WMO’s new analysis narrowly places 2014 as the hottest recorded since 1850, as have recent analyses from other organisations. The WMO analysis is particularly authoritative as it brings together a number of leading temperature records, as well as alternative ways of estimating the warmth of the globe. The average global air temperatures over land and sea in 2014 were 0.57C above the average of 14.00C for the 1961-1990 reference period. The record temperature was above those in 2005 and 2010, the next hottest years, but only by a small amount which was within the margin of uncertainty in the calculations. “The overall warming trend is more important than the ranking of an individual year,” said WMO secretary-general Michel Jarraud. “2014 was nominally the warmest … [Read more...] about 14 of the 15 hottest years on record have occurred since 2000, UN says
Malayalam movies have enjoyed a good market in the remake circuits. Over the years, we have seen a good number of super-hit Malayalam movies setting a strong foothold in the remake market, be it in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada or Telugu. Now, reports have been doing the rounds regarding the remake rights of one among the upcoming Malayalam movies, which is gearing up to hit the theatres in this month of September. Yes, we are talking about the upcoming Biju Menon starrer Padayottam, directed by debut film-maker Rafeeq Ibrahim. Certain unconfirmed reports have been doing the rounds that the Tamil remake rights of the film have already been sold and that too for a record price. At the same time, the reports also suggest that the satellite rights of the film have been sold to Surya TV for a huge amount. Padayottam was initially planned as an Onam release, but much like the other Malayalam movies scheduled as Onam releases, this film too got pushed ahead due to the massive floods that hit the … [Read more...] about This Upcoming Malayalam Movie Sets A Record In The Remake Circuit?
Geoffrey Rush has been awarded a record-breaking £1.5million after winning a #MeToo defamation case against a newspaper in Sydney, Australia. The Oscar-winning star sued The Daily Telegraph for defamation after it published claims that he behaved inappropriately towards a woman during a production of King Lear in Sydney from 2015 and 2016. The 67-year-old was accused of groping the woman's breasts and back, following her into a toilet and sending her an inappropriate text message - which he vehemently denies. In what is Australia's largest ever defamation payout for an individual, the country's federal court awarded him A$2.8 million after ruling that antipodean arm of News Corp defamed him. The payout will cover past and future economic loss, in addition to an initial A$850,00payment awarded in April, court documents showed on Thursday. A News Corp spokeswoman did not immediately respond when approached for comment. Rush's lawyer declined to comment. Rush, 67, had said the … [Read more...] about Geoffrey Rush awarded record-breaking £1.5million payout in #MeToo defamation case
