Janet Yellen Hopeful Biden Relief Package Will Bring Back Full Employment in 2022

· March 6, 2021 ·

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Friday that she hopes President Joe Biden 's $1.9 trillion coronavirus stimulus package will help bring back full employment by 2022. Speaking with PBS News Hour , Yellen said the U.S. needs to "go big" with coronavirus relief in order to help get the economy back on track to pre-pandemic levels. "It's a big [stimulus] package, but I think that we need to go big now, and that we can afford to go big," she said. "And the most important thing is to get our economy back on track and help people get their lives back, in order to make sure that this pandemic doesn't permanently scar our work force. And I think this is what we need. I'm hopeful that, next year, with a package of this size, we can be back at full employment." Yellen's comments came after Friday's announcement that the U.S. economy exceeded expectations by adding 379,000 new jobs in February . · March 7, 2021 ·

NEW YORK (AP) — Amanda Gorman, the 22-year-old poet who captured hearts at the inauguration of President Joe Biden, posted to social media that she was followed home by a security guard who demanded to know where she lived because she “looked suspicious.” “I showed my keys & buzzed myself into my building,” she tweeted of the incident Friday night. “He left, no apology. This is the reality of black girls: One day you’re called an icon, the next day, a threat.” Gorman, the nation’s youngest inaugural poet, lives in Los Angeles but did not specify where the encounter occurred. Her spokeswoman did not immediately return an email Saturday seeking additional comment. The post was met with thousands of messages of support on Twitter and Instagram. She followed up her post with a second comment that said: “In a sense, he was right. I AM A THREAT: a threat to injustice, to inequality, to ignorance. Anyone who speaks the truth and walks with hope is an obvious and fatal danger to … [Read more...] about Biden Inauguration Poet Amanda Gorman Says She Was Racially Profiled Near Her Home

President Biden to Sign Executive Order on Voting Access, Urges Senate to Pass H.R.1

· March 7, 2021 ·

President Joe Biden is set to sign an executive order Sunday to increase voter access as he urges the Senate to pass H.R. 1, the House Democrats’ voting rights package. His order “will modernize Vote.gov, order federal agencies to expand access to voter registration,” and “provide voting access and education to citizens in federal custody,” Fox News reported . It will also “examine barriers to citizens with disabilities voting and improve ballot tracking for overseas voters, including active duty military,” the article read. The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R.1, also known as the “For the People Act,” on Wednesday as Republicans warned it would compromise election integrity and lead to the federalization of the nation’s elections. “Every single American should be outraged” by the Democrat-led House passing the act, Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) said Wednesday evening, adding, “Democrats just voted to ban voter ID nationwide and force every state to permanently … [Read more...] about President Biden to Sign Executive Order on Voting Access, Urges Senate to Pass H.R.1

Biden win confirmed after Trump mob storms Capitol

· January 7, 2021 ·

Congress formally certified Joe Biden as the next US president on Thursday, dealing a hammer blow to Donald Trump whose supporters stormed the Capitol hours earlier,  triggering unprecedented scenes of mayhem in the seat of American democracy. Lawmakers in the Senate and House of Representatives successfully beat back Republican efforts to deny Biden the electoral votes needed to win, prompting loud cheers when the certification was announced. The affirmation of Biden's 306-232 victory over Trump in November essentially closes the door on the unparalleled and deeply controversial effort by Trump and his loyalists to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The president immediately released a statement pledging an "orderly transition" but suggesting he would remain in frontline politics, amid speculation that he may run again in 2024.
