Italy’s COVID-19 death toll passes 100,000, situation worsening

· March 9, 2021 ·

ROME: Italy's coronavirus death toll passed the 100,000 mark on Monday (Mar 8) and Prime Minister Mario Draghi warned that the situation was worsening again with a jump in hospitalisations. Italy is the seventh country in the world to reach the bleak milestone, following the United States, Brazil, Mexico, India, Russia and Britain. The health ministry said 318 new deaths from the disease had been recorded in the past 24 hours bringing the total tally since the epidemic hit the country 13 months ago to 100,103. It took nine months for Italy to register its first 50,000 deaths, and just 3.5 months to double it. Infections rose 23 per cent last week by comparison with the week before and health officials have warned that the country faces a fresh surge of cases as a more contagious variant of the disease, first detected in Britain, gains ground. Draghi acknowledged that the situation was deteriorating, but said his government was going to "significantly step up" its vaccination … [Read more...] about Italy’s COVID-19 death toll passes 100,000, situation worsening

Much-improved Ireland hammer inaccurate Italy to kick-start Six Nations campaign

· February 27, 2021 ·

D eath, taxes and Italy drubbings. This result will do nothing to silence those who argue that Italy are undeserving of their protected Six Nations status. Franco Smith’s team were dreadful. That is now 139 points and 19 tries they have conceded in three games. But in terms of getting Ireland out of a rut this was useful enough exercise. Ireland had arrived in Rome with criticism of their attacking play ringing in their ears , boasting the fewest number of tries in the first two rounds of this year’s championship (two), the fewest linebreaks (eight) and joint-fewest offloads (six). They left feeling like the All Blacks. Six tries, another perfectly good one ignored by the TMO Romain Poite, plus two more which were chalked off in a ludicrously one-sided second half at the Stadio Olimpico, were just what the doctor ordered for Andy Farrell’s men. While Scotland and England will provide far sterner tests, Ireland’s confidence will be buoyed by some of the combinations and play … [Read more...] about Much-improved Ireland hammer inaccurate Italy to kick-start Six Nations campaign

Under Draghi’s lead, Italy takes Europe another step away from populism

· March 8, 2021 ·

In assessing the new Italian government led by former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi , many analysts miss an essential point. The focus, of course, should be Italy — its issues and the crisis Draghi will face, starting with the pandemic. But the chances are high that his leadership will have an impact well beyond Italy, dramatically changing politics and economics across Europe. It’s still early, of course, but the stars have aligned domestically in Italy and at the European Union level to make such a wider change possible. Yet, extraordinarily, some international media ignore the wider impact that a global personality like Draghi may have a chance to make. The kindest commenter was The Economist, which compared Italy to South American democracies, with a difference: In the latter, when the going gets rough, the usual solution is a military coup. But Italy routinely reverts to a “technical government” led by prominent non-elected officials — Lamberto Dini, … [Read more...] about Under Draghi’s lead, Italy takes Europe another step away from populism

COVID-19: Italy surpasses 100,000 coronavirus deaths a year after imposing world’s first national lockdown

· March 8, 2021 ·

Italy has surpassed 100,000 coronavirus deaths a year after it became the first country in the world to impose a national lockdown due to the pandemic. The Italian health ministry said 318 people had died in the last 24 hours on Monday, bringing the total to 100,103. The latest figures mean Italy has the second highest number of deaths in Europe after the UK's 124,566. Nearly 14,000 new positive cases were also recorded on Monday, as the number of people in intensive care units (ICUs) rose to 2,700 - 95 more than a day earlier. Italy's total virus cases surpassed three million last week, with a new surge powered by the highly contagious variant that was first identified in Britain towards the end of 2020. Advertisement More than a year has passed since the first Italian coronavirus death - 78-year-old retired roofer Antonio Trevisan, who died on 21 February 2020. Hospitals in the northern region of Lombardy were soon overwhelmed and … [Read more...] about COVID-19: Italy surpasses 100,000 coronavirus deaths a year after imposing world’s first national lockdown
