Verizon profit beats estimates on remote working boost

· October 21, 2020 ·

REUTERS: Verizon Communications Inc beat estimates for third-quarter profit on Wednesday, helped by strong demand for its phone and internet services as offices and schools continued to operate virtually amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The health crisis has brought global economies to a halt, but the telecom sector has been relatively less affected. With lockdowns easing, Verizon gradually reopened all of its company-operated retail stores in the quarter, implementing touch-less retail, appointments and curbside pickups. Verizon added 283,000 postpaid phone subscribers in the third quarter, above the average estimate of 268,000, according to research firm FactSet. Total operating revenue fell 4.1per cent to US$31.54 billion, which the company attributed to lower customer activity and the timing of certain device launches. Apple Inc, one of Verizon's key partners, has delayed the launch of its new iPhones by about a month this year. Revenue in Verizon's media unit, which … [Read more...] about Verizon profit beats estimates on remote working boost

Samsung Electronics wins US$6.6 billion Verizon order for network equipment

· September 7, 2020 ·

SEOUL: Samsung Electronics said on Monday it had won a US$6.64 billion order to provide wireless communication solutions to Verizon in the United States, a major win for the South Korean firm in the next-generation 5G network market. Samsung's global prospects for its network business have improved following U.S. sanctions on its bigger rival Huawei, analysts said. Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg told CNBC in July last year that Verizon does not use any Huawei equipment. Verizon had already been a Samsung customer before the order. Verizon is believed to be Nokia’s biggest customer, JP Morgan research said in a July note. "Samsung winning the order from Verizon would help the company expand its telecom equipment business abroad, potentially giving leverage to negotiate with other countries,” said Park Sung-soon, an analyst at Cape Investment and Securities. The order is for network equipment, a Samsung spokesman said. The company declined to comment on detailed terms the … [Read more...] about Samsung Electronics wins US$6.6 billion Verizon order for network equipment

· November 20, 2020 ·

REUTERS: BuzzFeed on Thursday bought news website HuffPost from Verizon Communications Inc in the latest sign of consolidation in the online media world. The deal brings two once-hot digital properties - viewed as the future of news media but which have suffered from competition for ad dollars from Alphabet's Google and Facebook - under the control of one of HuffPost's co-founders. Verizon, which also owns Yahoo and TechCrunch, said it will invest in the new combined company and take a minority stake. The companies will syndicate content across each other's platforms, explore monetization opportunities and leverage ad formats, the companies said in a statement. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. In an interview, BuzzFeed Chief Executive Officer Jonah Peretti, who co-founded the Huffington Post in 2005, said he was attracted to the property's more affluent and age-diverse audience which "enhanced the size and scale of our media network." Verizon has struggled to … [Read more...] about BuzzFeed acquires news website HuffPost from Verizon Media

Commentary: The four deadly cybersecurity sins most of us are guilty of

· June 26, 2018 ·

SINGAPORE: Many people would have been advised by their IT departments, service providers or the Government to “use a strong password”, “protect your passwords” and “update your software regularly”, but have no idea why these are necessary cybersecurity measures. It may be that “why” is usually not explained and if it was, explanations may have been very technical. Such advice is also often ignored as these actions seem time-consuming yet ineffective. But basic cybersecurity need not be rocket science. How you secure your smartphone or computer should be no different from how you secure your physical house. You protect your assets in your home by preventing unsolicited and unauthorised access to your house. Similarly, protecting the personal information on your smartphone or computer requires restricting access to the data on it. So why do many neglect to do so? The main difference is that a house is visible whereas the digital world is not. Human nature makes us more … [Read more...] about Commentary: The four deadly cybersecurity sins most of us are guilty of
