Second US vaccine ready to ship after daily record 3,580 COVID-19 deaths

· December 18, 2020 ·

WASHINGTON: The United States on Thursday (Dec 17) stood ready to ship 5.9 million doses of a new coronavirus vaccine that is on the cusp of winning regulatory approval, just as the nation suffered its highest daily COVID-19 death toll with 3,580 lives lost. The tragic record set on Wednesday came while US hospitalisations rose for the 19th straight day, heightening the stakes as regulators considered whether to grant emergency use authorisation (EUA) for the vaccine developed by Moderna, a week after authorising the first vaccine from Pfizer and German partner BioNTech. Another 232,255 US cases were reported on Wednesday, the second highest daily case load on record, according to a Reuters tally. The United States leads the world with a cumulative 307,767 deaths and nearly 17 million reported COVID-19 cases, as many Americans and the outgoing administration of President Donald Trump have resisted calls by health experts for the stay-at-home orders and mask-wearing that have … [Read more...] about Second US vaccine ready to ship after daily record 3,580 COVID-19 deaths

Syrian Refugees Are Selling Their Organs to Survive

· May 16, 2016 ·

This article first appeared on the Syria Deeply site. The illegal trade in human organs has become widespread in Syria and neighboring countries, medical officials and victims say, with cross-border networks exploiting thousands of desperate Syrians. These networks purchase transplantable organs such as kidneys and corneas from Syrians and ship them to neighboring countries, where they disappear into the murky world of the international organ trade, they say. There are also allegations that organs have been stolen from prisoners. Yasser (not his real name) is one of those who sold one of his own kidneys, which he calls the "worst decision of my life." The 29-year-old fled the fighting in his home city of Homs, in western Syria, around 100 miles north of the capital Damascus, after the start of the war. He made his way to Cairo, but like many other Syrian refugees he had trouble getting work and found himself with no money to survive. He heard through acquaintances that … [Read more...] about Syrian Refugees Are Selling Their Organs to Survive

· December 21, 2020 ·

WASHINGTON: Top Capitol Hill negotiators sealed a deal Sunday (Dec 20) on an almost US$1 trillion COVID-19 economic relief package, finally delivering long-overdue help to businesses and individuals and providing money to deliver vaccines to a nation eager for them.
