Nepal political crisis accelerates, PM K P Sharma Oli ready to face Parliament says officials
Kathmandu: The political crisis in Nepal started after PM K P Sharma Oli suddenly decided to dissolve parliament and announced elections in December stating that there is a lack of cooperation on key policy issues by leaders of the rival faction of his ruling party. Later on February 23, Nepal Supreme Court rejected PM Oli’s decision and reinstated the Parliament in the nation. On Wednesday (February 24), one of the close aides to Nepalese Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli revealed that the PM has decided against resigning and has left it to the parliament to take a call on his future. "The prime minister will not resign now. There is no question about that," Surya Thapa, the aide, told Reuters. "He will face parliament," Thapa added without providing details. "Oli should pack up his bags and go to Balkot," said 25-year-old Purna Khadka, a protester whose face was painted in the colours of the party flag. Commentary: Domestic politics may delay India’s truce with China
SINGAPORE: For the first time since 1975, skirmishes at the India-China border have resulted in military casualties, marking a critical juncture in bilateral relations. This is a key moment for the wider Asian region, with states keenly observing China’s behaviour and attempting to discern its intentions. Yet, in his much-anticipated address to the nation on Tuesday (Jun 30), Prime Minister Narendra Modi remained conspicuously silent on China – focusing instead on COVID-19 and social assistance schemes. THE STRONG BJP India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has historically been more apprehensive about China than the Congress party and it perceives the Congress and other “left” parties in India to be ideologically different to it and more sympathetic to China. The BJP and other nationalist groups … [Read more...] about Commentary: Domestic politics may delay India’s truce with China
Ibrahimovic unimpressed by LeBron James’ political activism
REUTERS: AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic said sportspeople like Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James should quit sticking their nose into politics. Four-time NBA champion James, who Ibrahimovic described as a phenomenal basketball player, has been one of the NBA's leading voices against racial injustice and police brutality in the U.S.. A frequent critic of former U.S. President Donald Trump, James also helped form a group aimed at battling voter disenfranchisement in predominantly Black communities last year. "I like him (James) a lot. He's phenomenal, but I don't like when people with a status speak about politics. Do what you're good at doing," Ibrahimovic told UEFA and Discovery+ in Sweden. "I play football because I'm the best playing football, I'm no politician. If I'd been a politician, I would be doing politics. "This is the first mistake famous people do when they become famous: for me it is better to avoid certain topics and do what you're good doing, … [Read more...] about Ibrahimovic unimpressed by LeBron James’ political activism
Commentary: America, the world’s new epicentre for political instability
NEW YORK CITY: Whether the storming of the US Capitol was an attempted coup, an insurrection or an assault on democracy is merely a question of semantics. What matters is that the violence was aimed at derailing a legitimate transition of power for the benefit and at the behest of a dangerous madman. President Donald Trump should now be removed from power, barred from public office and prosecuted for high crimes. READ: Commentary: Donald Trump, half of America’s fantasy hero After all, the events of Jan 6 may have been shocking, but they were not surprising. I and many other commentators had long warned that the 2020 election would bring civil unrest, violence, and attempts by Trump to remain in power illegally. Beyond his election-related crimes, Trump is also guilty of a reckless disregard for public health. He and his administration bear much of the blame for the massive COVID-19 death toll in the United States, which accounts for only 4 per cent of the global … [Read more...] about Commentary: America, the world’s new epicentre for political instability
