COVAX Program to Roll Out Tens of Millions of Vaccine Doses Globally

· March 2, 2021 ·

JOHANNESBURG - The global COVAX vaccine distribution plan aims to deliver tens of millions of vaccine doses to low-income countries -- many of them in Africa – in the coming months, top global health officials say, describing this as a turning point in the quest to quash the coronavirus pandemic. The world’s largest, fastest, and most ambitious vaccine drive delivered 11 million vaccine doses Tuesday to Angola, Cambodia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nigeria. Between now and the end of May, said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the COVAX facility will deliver 270 million doses to 142 participating countries and economies. The global initiative was set up last April to ensure that poorer nations aren’t left out of the worldwide scramble for vaccine access. The program, which is projected to cost about $11 billion, is funded by donor nations, foundations and corporations. It is part of the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator, a global collaboration that works on the … [Read more...] about COVAX Program to Roll Out Tens of Millions of Vaccine Doses Globally

· September 20, 2019 ·

TOKYO: The first Rugby World Cup to be staged in Asia kicks off Friday (Sep 20) in Tokyo, as the game seeks to broaden its global reach beyond its traditional European and southern hemisphere heartlands. The tournament promises to be one of the most open in history, with at least five or six teams capable of preventing favourites New Zealand from winning an unprecedented third consecutive title. Organisers hope stars of the game such as All Black Beauden Barrett, Ireland's Johnny Sexton or South Africa's Siya Kolisi will spark enthusiasm for the game in Japan and Asia more broadly. The tournament will kick off on Friday at 6.45pm, Singapore time, when host Japan takes on Russia. The early signs are good, with officials saying the tournament should be close to a complete sell-out and a staggering 15,000 fans turning out on a public holiday just to watch Wales train. The global rugby showpiece will also serve as a tasty amuse-bouche for Japan as it prepares to host the … [Read more...] about Asia’s first Rugby World Cup to kick off as game seeks broader reach
