Alex Berenson: Cancel culture beyond Orwellian — this is why I won’t give in to it

· February 15, 2021 ·

close Video Concha: The New York Times is 'lionizing cancel culture' Fox News contributor Joe Concha reacts to The New York Times being accused of celebrating cancel culture for spotlighting a video of a teenaged girl using a racial slur, in which, led to her being forced to withdraw from college. Even George Orwell couldn’t have imagined it: in the country where free speech first became a constitutional right, left-wing journalists and frightened media companies are desperately censoring people with views they consider unpleasant. So far this month, New York Times columnists have called for a federal "reality czar" and asked cable companies to keep viewers from seeing Fox News as easily as CNN or MSNBC. A Times reporter was forced to resign for using a racial slur – though both he and the paper’s top editor, who is African American, said he had used it without malign intent. Video The Times then refused to run a column about the … [Read more...] about Alex Berenson: Cancel culture beyond Orwellian — this is why I won’t give in to it

How buses show enthusiasts new perspectives about Singapore – and themselves

· December 4, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: Nestled in his favourite seat close to the back of the bus, 21-year-old bus enthusiast Santhosh Kumar is in his element. When he takes buses with friends, he is "either a conversation killer, or everybody just quietens down (when I speak) … They say I’m an old man in a young man’s body - because I'm 21 years old, but I sound like I have 71 years of experience,” he told CNA. “I’m just passionate about everything around me, so when I’m passionate about something, I share it with others.” And share he does. During a 15 minute ride on bus service 170, Mr Kumar brings to life a route which to the unknowing eye would have seemed nothing but nondescript. As the bus whizzes along, he picks out the former Lee Kiat Seng workshop, where workers used to assemble buses for Singapore Traction Company. Just minutes down the road stands one of the oldest surviving petrol stations on the island, a quaint Shell station with a couple of gas pumps and a Route 66 vibe. Mr Kumar … [Read more...] about How buses show enthusiasts new perspectives about Singapore – and themselves

Domestic strife dampens US foreign policy

· January 27, 2021 ·

New US President Joseph R. Biden was sworn in with his wife Jill Biden by his side, photo: AFP Last Wednesday many Americans breathed a sigh of relief as Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th US President without any further incident from those who believe the election was “stolen” from former President Donald Trump. Instead of attending the ceremony as is tradition, Trump and his family took one last trip on Air Force One to Florida, where he will be based until the former reality TV star decides whether to run for president again in 2024 – or perhaps even endorse a family member for the post. Alongside Biden, Kamala Harris was sworn in as vice-president, becoming the first woman in American history – as well as the first woman of African-American and South Asian descent – to take on the role. “Few people in our nation’s history have been more challenged or found a time more difficult than the time we’re in now,” Biden said in his inauguration speech. He vowed to dedicate … [Read more...] about Domestic strife dampens US foreign policy

Raya and the Last Dragon cast on empowering childhoods and making the film

· February 26, 2021 ·

First it was Crazy Rich Asians, a Hollywood movie featuring an Asian American cast steeped in Chinese culture and filmed in Southeast Asia’s city-state, Singapore. Now, Disney, the content leader of everyone’s formative childhood, has provided a follow-up with Raya and the Last Dragon, the first Disney animated film about Southeast Asia, led by a Southeast Asian actress. Yes, that’s a lot of first that comes with several caveats, in that Mulan was the first Disney animated film with an Asian lead, but while Mulan was voiced by Chinese American actress Ming Na-Wen, of Star Wars and Marvel Comics fame, Raya is played by fellow Star Wars alum and Vietnamese American actress, Kelly Marie Tran. Speaking at a press conference that Geek Culture attended, Tran recognised the significance of her casting, and shared how having female heroes that look like you is empowering for young children. “It’s a big deal. I grew up with the sort of narrow perception of what a hero looks like, or … [Read more...] about Raya and the Last Dragon cast on empowering childhoods and making the film
