Northern Colorado and the Western Slope will claim larger shares of Colorado’s population as the state adds 3 million new residents over the next three and a half decades, according to state forecasts. Greeley and Fort Collins will more than double in population and the Western Slope will grow by two-thirds by 2050, the State Demography Office predicts, while Denver, Boulder, Pueblo and the central mountain resorts will grow at slower rates. Also, El Paso County will overtake a built-out Denver County as the state’s most populated. Between 2015 and 2050, Colorado will add the equivalent of another metro Denver, on its way to 8.46 million residents. Though it’s a lot of people, the state’s rate of growth actually is predicted to slow during that period as the baby boomer generation moves on. State and local officials use the forecasts to plan for growth, a hot topic as Colorado’s roads, housing market and environment strain from an influx of out-of-state migrants. There were no promises to create a Colorado city called Amazon. There were no bribes from the state like the 21-foot cactus an Arizona city sent to get the massive retailer to build a second headquarters there. And there was no way Colorado was going to touch one state’s lavish offer of $7 billion in public incentives. The state emailed the official bid a day before Amazon’s deadline, as well as mailed five paper copies overnight to the Seattle retailer’s headquarters. “Colorado’s proposal does not lead with incentives. It leads with talent,” said Sam Bailey, who led the Metro Denver Economic Development Corp. in working with the state to submit the official bid. “Ultimately, 50,000 jobs shouldn’t be led with incentives but a community that has the … [Read more...] about No bribes or cities named “Amazon”: Colorado’s pitch to get the next headquarters touts incentives that could exceed $100M
Denver has been here before, with a Seattle-based corporate behemoth considering a move that could bring many high-paying jobs to the region. Remember Boeing Corp.? Denver came in third behind Chicago and Dallas to lure the aerospace company’s headquarters despite offering a $15 million incentive package. This time it’s Amazon, which announced last week it is looking for a city for a second headquarters campus. Though the online retailer is looking nationwide, a potential bid from Colorado gained buzz as The New York Times picked Denver as the leader among 52 cities in its own analysis. “It’s like being chosen the Super Bowl winner before the season starts. You kind of put a target on your back,” joked veteran Denver developer Bill Mosher. Still, Mosher, who has worked in commercial real estate for more than 30 years, said he believes Denver has a good shot. “I think Denver and all the growth that’s been taking place here — and the metrics The New York Times utilized — … [Read more...] about Deja vu?
