Exclusive: Mexico’s government readying roughly US$5 billion Pemex lifeline, source says

· February 19, 2021 ·

MEXICO CITY: Mexico's government will inject between US$1.3 billion and US$1.6 billion into state oil company Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) this year and offer a tax break of 75 billion Mexican pesos (US$3.68 billion), a senior official told Reuters on Thursday. The world's most indebted oil company, Pemex had more than US$110 billion in financial debt at the end of the third quarter last year while its liabilities far exceeded its assets. In the past two years, the government of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has injected billions of dollars in capital in the loss-making company and reduced its tax burden. The source, who has direct knowledge of the matter but declined to be identified, said the tax reduction will be applied on a monthly basis and be separate from the profit sharing rate (DUC) that was already reduced from 58per cent to 54per cent for this year. Neither Pemex nor the finance ministry immediately responded to a request for comment. Texas energy freeze stretches to sixth day, raises Mexico’s ire

· February 18, 2021 ·

HOUSTON: Texas's freeze entered a sixth day on Thursday, as the largest energy-producing state in the United States grappled with massive refining outages and oil and gas shutins that rippled beyond its borders into neighboring Mexico. The cold snap, which has killed at least 21 people and knocked out power to more than 4 million people in Texas, is not expected to let up until this weekend. The deep freeze has shut in about one-fifth of the nation's refining capacity and closed oil and natural gas production across the state. The outages in Texas also affected power generation in Mexico, with exports of natural gas via pipeline dropping off by about 75per cent over the last week, according to preliminary Refinitiv Eikon data. Texas Governor Greg Abbott directed the state's natural gas providers not to ship outside Texas and asked state regulators to enforce that ban, prompting reviews. The state's electrical grid operator, ERCOT, was trying to restore power as thermal … [Read more...] about Texas energy freeze stretches to sixth day, raises Mexico’s ire

Mexico urges rich countries to stop ‘hoarding’ COVID-19 vaccines

· February 18, 2021 ·

MEXICO CITY: Mexico on Wednesday (Feb 17) made a plea at the UN Security Council for countries to stop hoarding vaccines against COVID-19 as poorer ones fall behind in the race to vaccinate their citizens. Three quarters of the first doses have been applied to citizens in only ten countries that account for 60 per cent of global gross domestic product (GDP), Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said, while in more than 100 countries no vaccines have been applied at all. "We urge countries to avoid hoarding vaccines and accelerate the first stages of COVAX deliveries, to give priority to countries with fewer resources," Ebrard said before the council, which Mexico is currently a member of. Ebrard said that so far no vaccines have been distributed under the scheme. Officials from the Pan American Health Organization said on Wednesday that countries could expect confirmation of their COVAX vaccine shipments soon, although the first batches were expected to be small. In all, … [Read more...] about Mexico urges rich countries to stop ‘hoarding’ COVID-19 vaccines

Kidnap capital Mexico eyes biometric phone registry, sparking privacy fears

· February 16, 2021 ·

MEXICO CITY: A plan by Mexican lawmakers to put millions of cell phone users' data in a biometric registry, billed as a tool to fight kidnapping and extortion, has sparked a backlash from telecoms companies and rights groups who warn it could lead to stolen data and higher costs. Already approved in the lower house of Congress, the reform is in line with President Andres Lopez Obrador's vow to counter crime using intelligence methods rather than force, but critics say it reveals the pitfalls of governments seeking to gather more citizen data for law enforcement purposes. The bill is scheduled to be taken up in the current session in the Senate, where the ruling MORENA party and allies hold a majority. Under the plan, America Movil, AT&T Inc and other carriers would be responsible for collecting customers' data, including fingerprints or eye biometrics, to submit to a registry managed by Mexico's telecoms regulator. But a telecoms industry group that counts some major … [Read more...] about Kidnap capital Mexico eyes biometric phone registry, sparking privacy fears

Mexico’s president says in video he’s recovering from COVID-19

· January 30, 2021 ·

MEXICO CITY: Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador posted a video of himself walking slowly through his offices Friday (Jan 29) and talking for about 13 minutes straight, saying he is recovering from COVID-19. López Obrador has not been holding his famous, hours-long daily press conferences for the first time since he took office on Dec 1, 2018. The president, who has been in isolation since testing positive for the coronavirus over the weekend, said: "The doctors tell me I am getting through the critical stage. I am doing well.” He has been receiving treatment at his apartment in the colonial-era National Palace, where he also has offices. López Obrador said that Mexico will import the AstraZeneca vaccine from India and said that the government expects China’s CanSino vaccine to submit test results soon. Along with Russia’s Sputnik vaccine, he said, Mexico expects to have 6 million doses of various vaccines by the end of February and 12 million in March. … [Read more...] about Mexico’s president says in video he’s recovering from COVID-19
