Donald Trump Facebook Ban Decision Will Be ‘Controversial’ Says Oversight Board Member

· February 26, 2021 ·

A member of Facebook 's Oversight Board has said their upcoming decision on whether or not to permanently ban former president Donald Trump from the platform will be "controversial." The social media giant temporarily banned the former president in January after the Capitol riots last year, which he was accused of inciting. Trump has denied this claim. Facebook's Oversight Board is a committee made up for 19 members from a variety of backgrounds and professions tasked with ruling over the platform's moderation decisions. It is in the process of deciding if and when Trump's ban should be lifted. Board member Helle Thorning -Schmidt, a former Danish Prime Minister, told the Wall Street Journal 's The Journal podcast she anticipated the board's result would be criticized regardless of the decision. She said the board was approaching questions such as whether there should be certain limitations for a politician, and whether a person's public profile should … [Read more...] about Donald Trump Facebook Ban Decision Will Be ‘Controversial’ Says Oversight Board Member

Commentary: The nightmarish end to Donald Trump’s presidency

· January 7, 2021 ·

WASHINGTON DC: Ninety minutes before rioters stormed Capitol Hill, US president Donald Trump addressed many of the same people using unequivocally inciteful language. “You’ll never take back our country with weakness,” Mr Trump said. “You have to show strength.” His personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, also called on the crowd to conduct “trial by combat”. A mob made up of “Make America Great Again” protesters, Proud Boys and other far-right groups took them at their word. What followed was desecration. Commentary: Donald Trump aims to win the US election, one way or another

· August 26, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: The metaphorical control panel in US President Donald Trump’s campaign headquarters flashes red. A strong Republican National Convention (RNC) week culminating with Trump’s acceptance speech could change the campaign’s dynamic. Trump must find a way to raise his approval rating, now below what any incumbent has needed to get re-elected. That will be even more challenging as the deaths from the pandemic continue to mount and more scandals hit close to home. Commentary: Is Facebook cosying up to US President Donald Trump?

· June 10, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: There are two interpretations of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's decision to leave up US President Donald Trump's recent post about protests over George Floyd's killing, and Zuckerberg’s subsequent promise of a policy review. One is that Zuckerberg is a principled advocate of free expression struggling with a hard case. The second is that the billionaire is bending principles to avoid crossing Trump, out of fear of Trump’s bluster about retaliation against Big Tech. A SWIFT U-TURN? Early on Friday morning (May 29), Trump cross-posted to Twitter and Facebook about violent protests against the police killing of George Floyd: “These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won't let that happen. Just spoke to [Minnesota] Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts." Twitter labelled it as “glorifying violence” , but Zuckerberg … [Read more...] about Commentary: Is Facebook cosying up to US President Donald Trump?
