As rival Microsoft Corp prepares the launch of its next generation Xbox Series X console for this year's holiday season, the presentation gave a first glimpse of how games will look when played on Sony's device. The PS5 promises advanced graphics and shorter load times through the use of its solid-state hard drive. Sony to take full control of listed financial arm for US$3.7 billion

· May 19, 2020 ·

TOKYO: Sony Corp will turn its financial arm, Sony Financial Holdings Inc, into a wholly owned unit through a tender offer worth about ¥400 billion (US$3.72 billion), the Japanese electronics and entertainment giant said on Tuesday (May 19). The deal will allow Sony to strengthen its presence in the fintech field to compete with global tech majors such as Alibaba Group Holding Ltd and Apple Inc. It also reflects Chief Executive Kenichiro Yoshida's strategy of making revenue streams more stable following a major revamp by his predecessor which shifted Sony's focus away from low-margin consumer electronics to entertainment content and subscription-based businesses. The deal is the biggest strategic move for Sony under Yoshida since a US$2.3 billion acquisition of EMI Music Publishing, announced soon after Yoshida took the helm in 2018. Sony already owns 65 per cent of Sony Financial. It plans to offer about ¥2,600 for each remaining Sony Financial share - a premium of about 26 … [Read more...] about Sony to take full control of listed financial arm for US$3.7 billion

Sony plans to launch PS5 on time

· May 13, 2020 ·

TOKYO: Financial forecasts and the COVID-19 pandemic are impacting all parts of Sony's business, but the PlayStation 5 console will be released as scheduled. Sony said Wednesday (May 13) as part of an earnings report that there is no reason to delay the public release of its latest gaming console as it navigates challenges with the supply chain and manages production challenges. "Development is progressing with the launch of the console scheduled for the 2020 holiday season," Sony said Wednesday. Nintendo warned Switch users that production and release of games could be delayed. XBox Series X is also due for a 2020 release. Microsoft's Phil Spencer said in April that the company hadn't considered a "plan B" and would release the console if all elements are deemed ready. Analysts have projected the price of PS5 will be in the range of US$470 to US$499 due to the "massive generational leap" incorporated in the hardware and software. A premium model could sell for US$650. … [Read more...] about Sony plans to launch PS5 on time

Sony reports 57per cent drop in fourth-quarter profit, declines to give outlook

· May 13, 2020 ·

TOKYO: Japan's Sony Corp on Wednesday reported a 57per cent drop in fourth-quarter operating profit and refrained from providing an outlook for the current year due to uncertainty related to the coronavirus outbreak. The electronics and entertainment firm posted an operating profit of 35.45 billion yen (US$331 million) for the January-March quarter, versus 82.73 billion yen a year prior, as the coronavirus hit demand for its smartphone image sensors, cameras and TVs. The result compared with the 73.77 billion yen average of nine analyst estimates compiled by Refinitiv. Uncertainty over the economic impact of coronavirus lockdowns continue to linger, making it hard to predict sales of consumer gadgets later in the year. Operating profit for the year ended March came to 845.46 billion yen, falling 5.5per cent from the previous year following two consecutive years of record highs. The impact from the outbreak reduced full-year profit by 68.2 billion yen, of which 35.1 billion … [Read more...] about Sony reports 57per cent drop in fourth-quarter profit, declines to give outlook
