As life returns to Yonge St., the stories of the victims remain

· April 30, 2018 ·

On April 23, 2018, shortly after 1 p.m., it began here, on the southwest corner of Yonge and Finch, when a white van coming through the intersection mounted the curb and began running down pedestrians. One week later, more or less to the minute, there are a few bouquets of flowers on the curb near a hydro pole, near chalk marks proclaiming “Love to all,” and there is a white van coming through the intersection. But now is not then. The van proceeds along the road normally, amid the other three full lanes of southbound traffic, while dozens of pedestrians flood into the crossing. People in suits, striding purposefully; joggers bouncing and huffing; an older woman with a cane. Black and white and Persian and Korean they come, not to mark the occasion of death, but to get where they are going — to pick up bulgogi from a nearby street cart, or fill a prescription at the Shoppers Drug Mart, or to make it to an appointment with the dentist whose office sits under the image of a broad … [Read more...] about As life returns to Yonge St., the stories of the victims remain

10 people dead, 16 injured: Officials have identified the victims killed in the Yonge St. van rampage

· April 25, 2018 ·

Ontario’s chief coroner on Friday released the names of all 10 people killed in Monday’s van rampage in Willowdale. They are Renuka Amarasingha, Andrea Bradden, Geraldine Brady, Sohe Chung, Anne Marie D’Amico, Chul Min “Eddie” Kang, Ji Hun Kim, Betty Forsyth, Munir Najjar and Dorothy Sewell. Eight women and two men, ranging in age from 22 to 94 — all killed when the driver of a white rental van rammed pedestrians along a stretch of Yonge St. between Finch and Sheppard Aves. Fourteen others were injured. Here’s what we know about the victims. We will add to their stories in the days to come. Geraldine Brady, 83, of Toronto Feanny Xu told the Star she learned of her friend Gerry Brady’s death on Tuesday. “She was the most caring and honest person I’ve ever met. Just amazing,” said Xu of her friend. “It’s very upsetting.” Xu said she met Brady 14 years ago through the direct-marketing company Avon. “She was still driving and actively delivering Avon orders,” … [Read more...] about 10 people dead, 16 injured: Officials have identified the victims killed in the Yonge St. van rampage

Superman & Lois: Clark Kent takes son Jordan to the Fortress of Solitude where he learns of Krypton

· March 3, 2021 ·

Clark Kent took his son Jordan to the Fortress of Solitude and introduced him to Jor-El on Tuesday's episode of Superman & Lois. Aware of the boy's powers, Clark [Tyler Hoechlin] flew with him to the icy cave, where he learned about the history of Krypton and met his grandfather's hologram. As Superman, Clark also found himself embroiled in a battle with Captain Luthor [Wolé Parks], who hinted that Kal-El would someday become a danger to the Earth. Icy cave: Clark Kent took his son Jordan to the Fortress of Solitude and introduced him to Jor-El on Tuesday's episode of Superman & Lois Lois [Elizabeth Tulloch] meanwhile quit her job at The Daily Planet after billionaire Morgan Edge began censoring her work to reflect more positively on him. Things looked bleak as the episode opened, with the Kents moving from their beloved Metropolis brownstone to the dusty back roads of Smallville, Kansas. On the timetable for the day: Scheduled physical activity time for the kids

· July 27, 2019 ·

Growing up, I think I was constantly in motion. This drove my parents nuts, of course. What mother enjoys having a hyperactive child running around her or the small apartment they live in all the time? So, more often than not, she’d let me out of the house the way you’d let a cat out or a dog loose in your backyard. The thing is, we didn’t live in a suburb with a backyard. We lived in New York City, one of the craziest and most crowded cities in the world. Parenting in the 1970s and parenting today are very different. Back then, my mother’s basic rule was pretty much, “Don’t get killed.” She let me loose on the streets of Manhattan at the same age my son is now. Which is pretty amazing, when you think about it. Today, we over-protect our kids. Singapore is a million times safer than Manhattan was in what the New York Times actually called “some of the darkest, bleakest years in New York’s history”. From the same article, the late 1970s in New York was an “era when the city was edgy … [Read more...] about On the timetable for the day: Scheduled physical activity time for the kids

Fame, Fortnite and teenage boys: How this online video game took over the world

· August 9, 2019 ·

At first, it seems like any other sporting event. Parents sip beer from clear plastic cups. Children eat overpriced soft pretzels and pizza, holding giant red styrofoam hands I recognise from baseball games. But instead of a grassy field, today the Arthur Ashe stadium in Queens – best known for hosting tennis stars for the glitzy US Open – is anchored by a massive 3-tier purple stage attached to the roof by cables. Tens of thousands of spectators are here to witness 200 players fight to the death on a virtual island. In reality, this translates to watching teenage boys – and they are all boys – pound their keyboards for roughly four hours. The last boy standing will be crowned a millionaire. I am at the first-ever Fortnite World Cup. At this 3-day, Disneyland-esque festival, the virtual monsters and online memes of Fortnite, the global gaming phenomenon, have been transposed into the real world. This is Woodstock for a generation raised on smartphones and iPads. Fortnite is … [Read more...] about Fame, Fortnite and teenage boys: How this online video game took over the world
