Gary Oldman’s tongue turned black and he’d ‘sweat vodka’ at height of alcoholism battle

· March 3, 2021 ·

Gary Oldman has shared the "hell" of his two decades as an alcoholic. The Oscar-winner has been sober for 24 years, but vividly recalls what life used to be like when he drank to excess. He told the LA Times : "I used to sweat vodka. It becomes such a part of you. "My tongue would be black in the morning. I blamed it on the shampoo. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy, to be in the grip of it. It’s hell." Oldman developed what he calls a self-effacing humour to "mask the inadequacy", and used to joke about his heavy drinking. The father-of-three recalls: "I would sit down and tell the waiter, ‘I’ll have a large vodka tonic. And can you bring it now because I’m an alcoholic. I need it quicker.’” Even during his worst years, the London-born California-based star still managed to memorise his lines and work, making him seem functioning. But after two decades of alcoholism, and two rehab stays, the Darkest Hours star stopped "romanticising" his addiction. Oldman, 62, … [Read more...] about Gary Oldman’s tongue turned black and he’d ‘sweat vodka’ at height of alcoholism battle

‘Extremely proud’: Thailand’s women defy all odds to qualify for cricket world cup

· September 16, 2019 ·

BANGKOK: Anxious eyes watched on as Nattaya Boochatham took strike on a cold day in windy Dundee in eastern Scotland. The final moments of Twenty20 cricket can be exhilarating, defined by flashes of brilliance or strength or risk. This was different. It was methodical, safe and secure. Still, her final single run to complete victory over Papua New Guinea unleashed wild scenes of celebration. They were surely justified. On the other side of the world from home, in a sport mostly alien to their nation, an unlikely dream had been fulfilled. Thailand had booked its place at the women’s T20 World Cup, the first Southeast Asian side to do so. “Everyone went onto the ground and started running. We were crying. And we were happy because it was a dream come true,” said the team’s captain Sorrnarin Tippoch, upon the team’s return to Thailand last week. “It’s what we’d been waiting for and devoted ourselves to achieve for such a long time, not mentioning all the pressure, failures and … [Read more...] about ‘Extremely proud’: Thailand’s women defy all odds to qualify for cricket world cup

Williams, pacers help Zimbabwe take 1-0 lead

· March 3, 2021 ·

AFGHANISTAN V ZIMBABWE IN UAE, 2021 by Cricbuzz Staff • Last updated on Share Tweet Williams' 105 gave Zimbabwe a decisive lead. © Getty Ibrahim Zadran ended up with 76. Afghanistan skittled out for a mere 135. The simple stat capsulises Afghanistan's below par performance with the bat and also Ibrahim's valiant hand on Day 2 of the first Test against Zimbabwe in Abu Dhabi. The pace trio of Blessing Muzarabani, Victor Nyauchi and Donald Tiripano picked eight of the 10 wickets to fall in the second innings, as Afghanistan crashed to 135 all out. Zimbabwe then chased down the meagre target of 17 without losing a wicket to go 1-0 up in the series. When the final session commenced, Afghanistan were in dire-straits at 49 for 6. At that stage, Ibrahim decided to take the aggressive route, essaying drives and punches off Nyauchi, Tiripano and Muzarabani. Abdul Wasi, who got a reprieve in the second session, then fell to Ryan Burl's … [Read more...] about Williams, pacers help Zimbabwe take 1-0 lead

Teenager admits to taking video of woman in toilet of Anchorvale Community Club

· August 13, 2019 ·

SINGAPORE: A 14-year-old boy who filmed a woman relieving herself in a toilet at a community club pleaded guilty on Tuesday (Aug 13) to one charge of insulting a woman's modesty. Muhammad Nur Haiqel Shazali, now 16, also pleaded guilty to a second charge of stealing vodka from a nearby supermarket. A third charge of criminal trespass will be taken into consideration for sentencing. The court heard that Haiqel was at Anchorvale Community Club in Sengkang on Jun 21, 2017, when he saw a 20-year-old woman entering a ladies' toilet past midnight. He wanted to see what she was doing in the toilet and followed her inside, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Regina Lim. He then turned on the video-recording function of his phone, held it above the door of the cubicle and began recording her relieving herself. When the boy hit his hand against the toilet door, the woman realised that he was there and screamed. Haiqel ran away and looked at the clip he had taken of the victim when he … [Read more...] about Teenager admits to taking video of woman in toilet of Anchorvale Community Club

Checking out a sushi and sake pairing – and an ice kacang ‘rainbow’ cocktail

· July 31, 2019 ·

What’s it like to go on a two-hour food crawl on a Sunday afternoon, indulging in Japanese food and some cocktails? Some lucky folks got to do just that at Raffles City, courtesy of our recent CNA Lifestyle Experiences event on Jul 28, where they indulged in a food and sake pairing at Sushi Tei, before ending the day with dessert and cocktails inspired by local flavours in a garden setting at The Botanic. “I thought the sake pairing was very well curated," one guest told CNA Lifestyle. "For example, the fried food was paired with a drier sake, and that was a very thoughtful pairing." Another guest mentioned that the event was a great opportunity for her to try different types of sake during one meal. “Sake pairing is new to me because I usually do wine pairing. And I found it very refreshing," she said. The event was exclusive to CNA Lifestyle Facebook followers; five winners won two invites each to the food crawl after participating in our contest.
