Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating a collision that killed a 62-year-old man in Roseneath, a community bordering Rice Lake roughly 30 kilometres northeast of Cobourg. Around 9:40 p.m. Saturday, an Ontario Provincial Police officer was en route to a call when the officer passed a vehicle in the area of County Road 18 and Roseneath Landing Road . Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said the officer pulled over his police car and did a u-turn after watching the vehicle pass. A short time later, the officer discovered the vehicle in a ditch on the north side of County Road 18. The vehicle had struck a tree. Its driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The SIU has assigned two investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist to the case. Tens of thousands of protesters marched through the streets of Hong Kong on Monday on the 22nd anniversary of the territory's return to China from Britain. Protesters tried to storm the Legislative Council building, using a metal cart and poles to smash windows amid anger over a controversial extradition bill. Riot police armed with pepper spray, gas masks and shields guarded the facility from within. Hong Kong has been shaken by huge demonstrations in the past three weeks against a controversial extradition bill which many fear could be used to deport political activists and dissidents to mainland China. The said bill was proposed on April 3, and its opposers argue that its controversial amendments will leave anyone on Hong Kong soil vulnerable to being grabbed by the Chinese authorities for political reasons or inadvertent business offences.
