PM Lee calls on Hougang voters to make a fresh start

· May 24, 2012 ·

SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has urged Hougang voters to make a fresh start by voting for People's Action Party (PAP) candidate Desmond Choo, who will work with the government to improve their lives. Mr Lee said: "Hougang has been an opposition ward for 20 years. Mr Low Thia Khiang left Hougang to contest in Aljunied GRC last year, and put Mr Yaw Shin Leong in charge. "A year later, the seat is unexpectedly vacant. Now the people of Hougang have a chance to make a fresh start, to vote in a PAP candidate who will work with the government to improve their lives. I hope Hougang voters seize this chance." PM Lee said this in an e-mailed reply to questions from the media on Thursday. He also said that while he fully understands the desire for alternate voices in Parliament, "the quality of the voices counts, and not just the quantity". Mr Lee said having one more MP, either PAP or opposition, makes a difference not on the percentage increase to the side the MP … [Read more...] about PM Lee calls on Hougang voters to make a fresh start

Workers who use active mobility devices must be covered by third-party liability insurance from December

· October 9, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE - From December, businesses who employ riders using active mobility devices on public paths  must ensure that they are covered by third-party liability insurance against injury and death during the course of their work. Active mobility devices refer to bicycles, personal mobility devices (PMDs), power-assisted bicycles, motorised wheelchairs or mobility scooters. The rule also applies to licensed device-sharing operators providing motorised devices for hire, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Friday (Oct 9). "They need to ensure that their riders, employees and outworkers who use such devices are adequately covered by third-party liability insurance against injury and death during the course of work, under an approved policy," the LTA said in an industry circular. These riders must be insured for a sum of at least $200,000 per claim and an excess amount that does not exceed $500 per claim. The insurance schemes for electric scooter and power-assisted bicycle … [Read more...] about Workers who use active mobility devices must be covered by third-party liability insurance from December

Parts of road next to Kampung Admiralty to be pedestrianised in a trial starting in February

· January 21, 2021 ·

SINGAPORE - From next month, a stretch of road next to Kampung Admiralty will be temporarily closed off to cars and other private vehicles as part of a trial to repurpose road lanes as footpaths, pedestrianised streets or cycling paths. Water-filled barriers will placed along a stretch of Woodlands Ring Road, located between Woodlands Drive 63 and Drive 71, closing off the westbound lane to traffic, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Thursday (Jan 21). The eastbound lane of the road will be converted to a bus-only road that only public buses and emergency vehicles can access. The partial pedestrianisation of Woodlands Ring Road comes after the Transport Ministry set out plans in August last year to re-imagine Singapore's road infrastructure, by converting certain under-used road lanes into cycling and bus lanes, as well as pedestrianising certain roads. It is part of Singapore's ongoing push to go car-lite, and promote walking and cycling. Other car-lite projects … [Read more...] about Parts of road next to Kampung Admiralty to be pedestrianised in a trial starting in February

Important to balance govt’s key goals for S’pore: PM Lee

· December 2, 2012 ·

SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the government is adjusting the balance between its key goals to achieve Singapore's future objectives. Mr Lee, who likened these goals to yin and yang elements that complement each other, said it is important to strike a balance between them. Mr Lee, who is also secretary-general of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), said this at the party's 32nd conference on Sunday morning. Stressing that the PAP must set a clear direction, he highlighted three key goals. First, it wants to achieve a vibrant economy by creating good jobs for everyone, as well as a harmonious society where people can enjoy a balanced and fulfilling life. Second, it wants a meritocratic system where people succeed based on their effort and contributions, along with special effort to help those who start off with less to do well in school and upgrade at work. Third, it wants to build a Singapore where citizens belong and feel as one, as well as an … [Read more...] about Important to balance govt’s key goals for S’pore: PM Lee
