· February 26, 2021 ·

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Governor Tom Wolf is launching criticism against charter schools. Pennsylvania’s governor says they drain funds from school districts and lead to hikes in property taxes. Charter schools are quick to defend themselves, arguing they provide a quality education for students who struggle in traditional classrooms. Mum ‘disgusted’ after daughter, 10, sent ‘inappropriately sexual’ work from school

· February 26, 2021 ·

A mum was left "disgusted" after her 10-year-old daughter was sent home-schooling work that included "inappropriately sexual" phrases. Annette Farrington, 27, from Fazakerley, Liverpool, was home-schooling her daughter when she noticed the worrying material. The English homework included phrases such as "She fondled", "I stroked", and "She felt his". Annette said: "She got the homework just before half-term but because there was so much we had some left over so we were doing it yesterday. "She was doing work on the Holocaust, and I think it had got mixed up with that. "When I was looking at it I thought that doesn't even make sense, why it would be there? "But after speaking to the school they said it was part of an English lesson giving examples to help kids make their own story." Printed on one of the English worksheets for her daughter were short sentences describing how somebody may feel. Under the header "How do I feel?" examples were listed, including "When I … [Read more...] about Mum ‘disgusted’ after daughter, 10, sent ‘inappropriately sexual’ work from school

Tokyo high schools ask students to certify hair colour not altered: Report

· February 26, 2021 ·

TOKYO: Nearly half of Tokyo high schools ask students with hair that is wavy or not black to submit certificates confirming that their hair is not artificially altered, public broadcaster NHK has reported. Of 177 high schools run by the Tokyo Metropolitan government, 79 ask for these certificates signed by parents, NHK said on Thursday (Feb 25), citing information the Japanese Communist Party obtained from the metropolitan government. In Japan, many schools have strict rules about hair colour, accessories, make-up and uniforms, including the length of skirts for girls. Tokyo's board of education told NHK that the hair certificates are not compulsory. But the broadcaster said only five of the 79 schools make it clear in writing that students aren't required to submit them. In 2017, a woman in Osaka sued the prefectural government for damages after she was forced to dye her naturally brown hair black. The then-21-year-old sought about ¥2.2 million (US$20,700) in damages, … [Read more...] about Tokyo high schools ask students to certify hair colour not altered: Report

Coronavirus: Govt will help families instead of mandating refunds from pre-schools, says MSF

· April 4, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE - As pre-schools and student care centres suspend general services from Wednesday , many parents have asked if they can get any fee refunds or waivers. On Saturday evening (April 4), the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) called for understanding from parents, saying that many service providers would face closure or have to lay off staff if providing refunds were made compulsory. "Rather than to mandate refunds which help families but hurt businesses, the Government is implementing assistance measures, to help both families and businesses," a ministry spokesman said in response to queries. But parents can still contact their pre-schools and student care centres for more clarity, she said. "The operators may have their own administrative policies on refunds or waiver of fees, taking into account the government support provided to businesses." Minister for Social and Family Development Desmond Lee said on Friday that general services at all pre-schools … [Read more...] about Coronavirus: Govt will help families instead of mandating refunds from pre-schools, says MSF
