Boris Johnson ‘setting up a charity’ to fund lavish refurb of his Downing Street flat
Boris Johnson is trying to set up a charity to help fund a luxurious revamp of his grace-and-favour flat, it was claimed today. The Prime Minister faces questions over works overseen by his fiancee Carrie Symonds in the plush, four-bed living space above No11. The 32-year-old has removed Theresa May ’s “John Lewis furniture nightmare” and paintings by British artist John Nash hang alongside works by the PM himself, according to an article in Tatler. The Cabinet Office will be forced to publish any taxpayer spending on the project in its annual accounts this summer. But today No10 refused to deny reports that the Prime Minister, 56, wants to fund the some of refurb through donations - after being told he could only claim around £30,000 from the state. The Daily Mail reported Mr Johnson had privately complained the cost was “totally out of control” and amounted to “tens and tens of thousands”, which he would struggle to afford after an expensive divorce from ex-wife Marina … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson ‘setting up a charity’ to fund lavish refurb of his Downing Street flat
Singapore Budget 2018: GST to be raised from 7% to 9% some time between 2021 and 2025
SINGAPORE - The goods and services tax (GST) is set to increase from 7 per cent to 9 per cent some time between 2021 and 2025. This comes as the Government's spending on healthcare, infrastructure and security has gone up and is expected to increase further in the years to come. Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat made the announcement in his Budget statement in Parliament on Monday (Feb 19). The exact timing will depend on three factors: the state of Singapore's economy, how much the country's expenditures grow, and how buoyant Singapore's existing taxes are. But Mr Heng said he expected that the Government would need to do so earlier rather than later. Mr Heng said the GST increase is "necessary because even after exploring various options to manage our future expenditures through prudent spending, saving and borrowing for infrastructure, there is still a gap". He said the 2 percentage point increase will provide the Government with revenue of almost 0.7 per cent of … [Read more...] about Singapore Budget 2018: GST to be raised from 7% to 9% some time between 2021 and 2025
Fed moves to backstop funding for US companies as coronavirus fallout spreads
REUTERS: The U.S. Federal Reserve moved Tuesday to ensure the flow of credit to U.S. companies, banks and even local governments amid a nationwide scramble for ways to blunt the economic fallout from the coronavirus crisis. The Fed in the morning announced it would reopen the so-called Commercial Paper Funding Facility to underwrite the short-term loans that companies often use to pay for their operations, a key financial market backstop first set up 2007 to 2009. At day's end it extended its reach as the economy's lender of last resort to the two dozen Wall Street primary dealers who are critical to the functioning of bond and other financial markets. By letting those companies pledge municipal bonds, corporate debt and equity securities as collateral for 90-day Fed loans, the Fed aimed to keep credit flowing to parts the economy that may face an unfolding nationwide cash crunch. The actions were approved by the U.S. Treasury Secretary under emergency rules that broaden the … [Read more...] about Fed moves to backstop funding for US companies as coronavirus fallout spreads
