India investment body backs incentives for US$706 million Samsung display plant – letter
NEW DELHI/LUCKNOW: Samsung Electronics should get tax and other incentives from Uttar Pradesh as the South Korean company looks to invest some 53.67 billion rupees (US$705.75 million) in a smartphone display manufacturing plant in the state, India's lead investment promotion body said in a letter. Samsung, one of the top smartphone sellers in India, signed a memorandum of understanding with Uttar Pradesh in 2019 on the project. A source familiar with the matter said this would relocate manufacturing previously done in China. The letter, seen by Reuters, was sent to Uttar Pradesh's state government by Invest India in April. Reuters could not determine if the promotion body discussed the letter with Samsung. The Korean company and Invest India did not respond to requests for comment. Samsung expects to create some 1,300 jobs at the plant, the letter said. The facility is likely to begin operations in 2021, the source said. Apple’s ProRaw is why I reach for my iPhone and not my Google Pixel
Apple's new ProRaw photo format has turned me into an iPhone guy. I still love my Google Pixel . But more and more often, I reach for my iPhone 12 Max Pro when taking a shot. Its telephoto camera, which sits alongside wide angle and ultrawide cameras, is a big draw. With Snapdragon 855 chip, Android phones get iPhone’s photo-packing ability
Qualcomm's next flagship processor is embracing the same photo format technology championed by Apple , a move that will let you squeeze more pictures into your next high-end Android smartphone and maybe advance beyond ordinary snapshots. Last year, Apple introduced support for High Efficiency Image File Format, or HEIF , as part of an effort to improve digital photography, giving it an advantage in the area for more than a year. HEIF's most obvious selling point is that photos are half the size of JPEGs of the same quality, which means you can fit more on your phone and use less network data to share shots with your friends. But HEIF offers other advancements, too -- support for depth maps that record how far away parts of a scene are from the camera, for example, or a way to house the quick videos called live photos. Now those advantages will come to at least the high end of the Android market, helping casual snapshooters and serious photographers get more out of their … [Read more...] about With Snapdragon 855 chip, Android phones get iPhone’s photo-packing ability
Australian regulator says Google’s US$2.1 billion Fitbit deal could harm competition
SYDNEY/BENGALURU: Australia's antitrust regulator warned Google's planned US$2.1 billion acquisition of fitness tracker maker Fitbit may give it too much of people's data, potentially hurting competition in health and online advertising markets. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is the first regulator to voice concerns about the deal in a preliminary decision on Thursday. The Alphabet Inc-owned tech giant is already at loggerheads with the Australian government over planned new rules about how internet companies use personal information. "Buying Fitbit will allow Google to build an even more comprehensive set of user data, further cementing its position and raising barriers to entry to potential rivals," ACCC Chairman Rod Sims said on Thursday. "User data available to Google has made it so valuable to advertisers that it faces only limited competition." The ACCC, which does not generally have the power to block a deal outside Australia, will announce its … [Read more...] about Australian regulator says Google’s US$2.1 billion Fitbit deal could harm competition
