This iPhone and Samsung Galaxy camera comparison was not what I expected

· February 28, 2021 ·

The $829 (£799, AU$1,349) iPhone 12 has two rear cameras and Samsung's $800 (£769, AU$1,249) Galaxy S21 has three rear cameras. Are more cameras better? Or does a higher price mean better photos? To find out, I did a good old-fashioned camera shootout. The results surprised me. There aren't many people deciding between an iPhone 12 and Galaxy S21 based solely on their cameras. Maybe there is a small niche of professional photographers, like me, who'd use cameras to decide between a Galaxy S21 Ultra or an iPhone 12 Pro Max. But most people stick to what they know and if someone switches from iOS to Android or the other way around, cameras won't be the only deciding factor. Cut through the chatter Subscribe to CNET's Mobile newsletter for the latest phone news and reviews. With that acknowledgement of reality out of the way, let's take a look at these cameras. Despite a similar price, the Galaxy S21 and iPhone 12 represent two different approaches to phone … [Read more...] about This iPhone and Samsung Galaxy camera comparison was not what I expected

First look: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 launches on Sep 18 in Singapore

· September 10, 2020 ·

Bigger screens, better displays, smarter chips – for better or for worse, this is the current smartphone world we live in. And all those bells and whistles, as we know, inevitably come with higher price tags. Unless you’ve been living under a rock (with no Wi-Fi), most of us will admit that the smartphone is, arguably, the most important tech product in our lives. And even if one is willing to spend top dollar on one of life’s little luxuries, justifying and rationalising spending a month’s rent on a new communication device is nonetheless, necessary. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is the tech giant’s latest attempt to prove its swish-yet-inventive worth. READ: Is a 7.6-inch screen big enough for you? Samsung's new Galaxy Z Fold 2 is coming soon It is Samsung's third and latest foldable device, following hot on the heels of the redesigned first Galaxy Fold which launched September last year, and the Galaxy Z Flip which dropped earlier this year in February. … [Read more...] about First look: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 launches on Sep 18 in Singapore

Hands-on review: Is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip worth the S$1,998 price tag?

· February 27, 2020 ·

It seems like the second coming of the clamshell phone is officially mainstream. After Motorola’s Razr, which came out last year, it’s Samsung’s turn with the Galaxy Z Flip. The South Korean tech company is, of course, no stranger to phones with folding displays, having launched its Galaxy Fold last year. But the Z Flip – the first foldable phone to come out in 2020, recently followed by Huawei’s own Mate Xs – has some key and well-received differences to its older, larger-sized sibling. It’s the ultimate futuristic throwback to the clamshells of the 90s. Unlike the Fold, which opens like a book and into a tablet, the Z Flip works like a traditional flip phone that opens into the conventional smartphone design we’re already used to. READ: Samsung launches Galaxy Z Flip, three S20 phones – including an Ultra version At just 7.36cm tall when folded, the 186g Z Flip is incredibly pocket-friendly and fits snugly in the palm. When fully flipped open, it reveals a … [Read more...] about Hands-on review: Is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip worth the S$1,998 price tag?

Hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy S20 phones and their Space Zoom cameras

· February 12, 2020 ·

Samsung began the new decade with a new name for its flagship S-series phones. Instead of running with the S10 – which was supposed to mean we would’ve gotten an S11 – the new phones are called S20s. There will be three variants in this series: The S20, S20+ and premium S20 Ultra. READ: Samsung launches Galaxy Z Flip, three S20 phones – including an Ultra version The Korean phone company says their own research has shown the number one reason for mobile users to upgrade is the camera, and the biggest complaints they’ve gotten about the current phone systems include soft focus, or bokeh effect, moving objects, and poor zoom quality. Qualities, Samsung decided to focus on for the S20. We were able to have a hands-on look prior to the Galaxy Unpacked event in San Francisco, where the Galaxy Z Flip was also announced – and here’s what we think. SPACE (ZOOM) AGE CAMERA The re-designed camera system uses artificial intelligence (AI) and larger sensors to … [Read more...] about Hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy S20 phones and their Space Zoom cameras
