This iPhone and Samsung Galaxy camera comparison was not what I expected

· February 28, 2021 ·

The $829 (£799, AU$1,349) iPhone 12 has two rear cameras and Samsung's $800 (£769, AU$1,249) Galaxy S21 has three rear cameras. Are more cameras better? Or does a higher price mean better photos? To find out, I did a good old-fashioned camera shootout. The results surprised me. There aren't many people deciding between an iPhone 12 and Galaxy S21 based solely on their cameras. Maybe there is a small niche of professional photographers, like me, who'd use cameras to decide between a Galaxy S21 Ultra or an iPhone 12 Pro Max. But most people stick to what they know and if someone switches from iOS to Android or the other way around, cameras won't be the only deciding factor. Cut through the chatter Subscribe to CNET's Mobile newsletter for the latest phone news and reviews. With that acknowledgement of reality out of the way, let's take a look at these cameras. Despite a similar price, the Galaxy S21 and iPhone 12 represent two different approaches to phone … [Read more...] about This iPhone and Samsung Galaxy camera comparison was not what I expected

Chilling out – Austrian breaks record for standing in box of ice

· September 6, 2020 ·

MELK, Austria: An Austrian on Saturday kept his cool and set a new world record for standing in a box full of ice cubes, lasting a teeth-chattering two hours, 30 minutes and 57 seconds. Wearing only a pair of swimming trunks, 42-year-old Josef Koeberl was covered in ice up to his shoulders in a transparent box, his arms crossed against his chest. He beat the previous record for full-body contact with ice of two hours, eight minutes and 47 seconds, which he set himself last year. "It's a great feeling, above all the sun - the warmth feels good," Koeberl told reporters after emerging from his frozen confinement into a balmy afternoon in the town of Melk on the Danube, where a small crowd watched him on the main square. "I'll manage to put my socks on myself. The first thing that has to warm up are your feet," he said. Nasdaq, S&P again hit all-time highs, Dow ends +0.3%

· August 27, 2020 ·

NEW YORK: The approach of Hurricane Laura could not dampen Wall Street's ebullient optimism on Wednesday (Aug 26), as the Nasdaq and S&P 500 again climbed to new records fuelled by solid earnings and economic data. The benchmark Dow Jones Industrial Average reversed its early doldrums and gained 0.3 percent to close at 28,331.92. The tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index posted its fifth consecutive all-time high close, after jumping 1.7 per cent to 11,665.06, while the broad-based S&P 500 gained 1.0 per cent to finish at 3,787.3, its fourth straight record. Traders also may be putting a lot of stock in the highly-anticipated speech by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Thursday, which is expected to send signals about the trajectory of interest rates in coming months. But the changes Powell is set to preview about how the central bank communicates policy would not have any impact until the economy starts to recover and inflation shows signs of life. Analysts say the … [Read more...] about Nasdaq, S&P again hit all-time highs, Dow ends +0.3%

Woodstock: ‘It Was Like Balling for the First Time’

· September 20, 1969 ·

WOODSTOCK , N.Y. — Chicago was only the labor pains. With a joyous three-day shriek, the inheritors of the earth came to life in an alfalfa field outside the village of Bethel, New York. Slapping the spark of life into the newborn was American rock and roll music provided by the Woodstock Music and Art Fair. And Dylan’s Mr. Jones, who has, indeed, been aware of what is happening, but has preferred to denounce the immorality of fucking around with his values, is now forced to acknowledge both the birth and its legitimacy. The New York Times , which had given the story front-page coverage for three days running, thundered on its editorial page the Monday-after that it was “an outrageous episode” and demanded to know “what kind of culture it is that can produce so colossal a mess?” But, in a reversal astounding for that Establishment journal, a second editorial Tuesday sheepishly allowed that the gathering was “essentially a phenomenon of innocence . . . they came, it seems, to … [Read more...] about Woodstock: ‘It Was Like Balling for the First Time’

The pandemic offers time to clear out your ‘emotional cupboard’ and work out priorities

· August 17, 2020 ·

The future is where it’s at, those life advisers used to say. Plan your next five years, dream big, book that holiday to Spain, happiness lies around the next corner. And never look back. Snake-oil merchants selling the wonders of the future have not been much in evidence of late. Since coronavirus slowed down the world, ambitions have been wound in, holidays curtailed and we are pitched again into uncertainty. These eerie past few months have meant that many of us, without any clear line forward, have found ourselves in the far less trendy temporal dimension of the past. During lockdown, we were plonked in our real domestic lives and, almost on autopilot, began a process of clearing out our houses, disposing of all the things that had accumulated around us. Rather than planning forwards, here we were sorting backwards. The excuse of having no time to do it had dissolved. Kitchen cupboards were organised enough for an inspection by the queen, cars were washed, children’s … [Read more...] about The pandemic offers time to clear out your ‘emotional cupboard’ and work out priorities
