SINGAPORE: The National Heritage Board (NHB) intends to gazette the Padang and the Singapore River Bridges as national monuments, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat said on Saturday (Aug 3). Mr Heng made the announcement to commemorate the nation’s bicentennial this year, “in light of the significance that the Singapore River Bridges and the Padang have to our growth and development as a nation”, said NHB in a news release. This will also accord these sites with the “highest level of preservation in view of their national significance”, it added. Singapore currently has 72 national monuments, including the Istana, Esplanade Park Memorials and Raffles Hotel. The Mekong River delta, known as the ‘rice bowl’ of Vietnam, is home to beautiful flower villages. These are prime tourist destinations in the Southeast Asian country. The largest flower village in the Mekong Delta region is Sa Dec, in the Dong Thap province. This village is 100 years old and is the largest flower supplier in southern Vietnam. Its residents earn a living mainly by growing flowers and ornamental trees. Considered the floral capital of the Mekong Delta, Sa Dec is home to around 2,500 floral varieties. These are grown across a total area of 600 hectares according to local newspapers. Flowers grow all year round in bamboo baskets on elevated racks above water in Sa Dec. Flowers are a key part of Vietnam's biggest national holiday, Tet, the Lunar New Year festival. SINGAPORE: No signs have been found linking recent food poisoning incidents traced to Mandarin Orchard Hotel, caterers FoodTalks and Tung Lok Millenium and Spize Restaurant at River Valley Road, authorities said on Friday (Dec 14). The Ministry of Health (MOH), National Environment Agency (NEA) and Agri-Food and Veterinary Agency of Singapore (AVA) said in a joint press release that they had completed investigations into separate gastroenteritis incidents traced to the hotel, FoodTalks Caterer and Manufacturer and Tung Lok Millennium. They did not identify any links between the three separate gastroenterities incidents. There were also no links to another food poisoning incident at Spize Restaurant's River Valley outlet.
