The human loss from the coronavirus will not be reflected in the 2020 census because of a matter of timing, which could save a congressional seat for New York but cost Alabama one. Because the start of the pandemic in the U.S. and the April 1 reference date used for the census fell so close to each other last year, the deaths that began in mid-March will not show up in the state population figures that determine political representation in Congress. The timing will paper over the losses from the virus, which has killed around 44,000 people in New York state, including concentrations in some New York City neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. Alabama has reported around 8,000 virus-related deaths. New York still is projected to lose at least one seat, but the quirk in the calendar should ensure that the state gets the last of the 435 congressional seats by a margin of more than 20,000 people, and that would save it from losing a second congressional seat, said Kimball … [Read more...] about Calendar timing means virus deaths won’t be seen in census

Phuket wastewater won’t stink
KAMALA: Residents in Kamala were informed at a public hearing on July 7 that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report needed to build a 350-million-baht battery of underground wastewater treatment facilities is now complete. The project only needs final approval from the provincial review board and funding to move forward. Kamala Deputy Mayor Santi Auttasup chaired the final public hearing, required as part of the EIA review process. The event was held at the offices of the Kamala Tambon Administration Organization (TAO). Also attending were Kamala TAO council members and about 20 local residents. Explaining the 1.5-million-baht EIA report was Assoc Prof Sittichai Tantanasarit, who headed up the Kasetsart University consulting team that carried out the six-month study. Kamala currently produces about 3,200 cubic meters (m 3 ) of wastewater a day but has no municipal wastewater treatment system, said Dr Sittichai. The only wastewater treatment systems currently … [Read more...] about Phuket wastewater won’t stink
Lagging vaccine rollout could cost Liberals in a big way
When this all started, it’s fair to say that no one, no government, could be truly prepared for what was to come. And so, Canadians responded with their characteristic reasonableness. They supported the government as it scrambled to launch a blizzard of programmes and plans in response to a crisis, the dimensions of which were changing by the day. But for all the things we didn’t know, the one thing we did know about this virus was that at some point, the answer would be a vaccine. And so, all these months later, it is equally easy to understand why Canadians are losing their minds at what has become a bungled vaccine rollout. Twin polls this week revealed a three per cent drop in the Liberals’ electoral support, and that a majority of Ontarians blame the federal government for the failures. And I expect this trend to continue. As we approach the one-year anniversary of this wretched plague, there is, all around us, mounting evidence of incompetence on the COVID-19 … [Read more...] about Lagging vaccine rollout could cost Liberals in a big way
DIY your at-home haircut with these 5 tips
It feels like we’re month 65 into the pandemic, and when you look in the mirror, it may feel like much longer. If you’ve not been to the barber in quite some time and fancy trying a little at-home hair session, there are things you can do to improve your chances of success (and a few must-nots). Do it yourself (DIY) haircuts aren’t meant for coming up with an entirely new style or doing an aggressive trim — it’s best to leave that to the experts. But if you need to trim bangs or split ends and give yourself a fresh new look, here are some tips that can keep you looking good for all of your Zoom calls. Invest in proper scissors Do not — we repeat — do not grab a pair of kitchen shears and go near your hair. We don’t care how many times you’ve cleaned them before or since using them — they are meant for food only. The blades are also much duller than styling shears, which can cause more split ends and an uneven cut. Instead, invest in a pair of sharp styling shears that are … [Read more...] about DIY your at-home haircut with these 5 tips
India’s electronic makers gear up for a blockbuster launch season
India’s top smartphone and consumer electronics makers said they are gearing the highest number of new product launches this year in four years as supply of components have improved and are almost back to pre-Covid levels. LG , Samsung , Xiaomi , Panasonic , Realme , Vivo and Godrej Appliances are all planning one of the highest numbers of new model launches this year, company and industry executives said. New launches took a backseat last year due to poor component supplies owing to global surge in demand for electronics that neither the companies nor component makers could forecast. Containers from China were getting held up with Indian custom authorities in ports and airports for scrutiny after border clashes and a fiscal quarter was lost due to lockdown and overall innovation pipeline slowing down due to the pandemic. The shortage was particularly severe for semiconductors used in smartphones, laptops and televisions, which too has started to ease now … [Read more...] about India’s electronic makers gear up for a blockbuster launch season
