Commentary: China dreams big with the world’s longest sea bridge

· November 3, 2018 ·

BEIJING: The Chinese government is dreaming big by building massive infrastructure projects nationwide. It is setting the stage for the country’s transformation into an epicentre of economic and human. By constructing record-breaking structures, such as opening up in August, the world’s longest sea bridge, the 55km-long Zhuhai-Hong Kong-Macau Bridge with a 6.7-km underwater tunnel, Beijing believes these moves will earn the nation a new economic superpower status. China remains the world’s most populous nation with nearly 1.4 billion people. Hundreds of millions of poor migrant workers that originally hailed from impoverished farming villages continue to move each year to reside and work in the country’s major cities, including its first-tier cities - Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Chongqing. Experts worried about impacts of Chinese Red River dams

· March 2, 2021 ·

The situation is set to worsen and Hanoi has to pay due attention, they add. In the last week of February, the Red River section that flows through Lao Cai Province in northern Vietnam has become so clear that there are some shallow areas towards the banks where the river bed can be seen at a depth of one meter. This is a highly unusual development because the Red River is known for its reddish or pinkish hue. Dao Trong Tu, head of the executive board of the Vietnam Rivers Network, said one possible reason for the changes seen in the Red River is rooted in China. A series of hydropower plants and reservoirs operated by China further upstream could have held back alluvium, he said. The Red River, over 1,100 km long, originates in China and flows through 26 localities in northern Vietnam including Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc and Hanoi, with a combined population of more than 26 million. The river section that flows through Vietnam is about 510 km long. Tu said that of … [Read more...] about Experts worried about impacts of Chinese Red River dams

At 500-metre table, Prague citizens see coronavirus out with a dinner

· July 1, 2020 ·

PRAGUE: Seated around a 500-metre-long table covered with white cloth, Prague citizens gathered on the medieval Charles Bridge on Tuesday (Jun 30) to say goodbye to the new coronavirus epidemic. On the eve of the easing of yet more restrictions imposed since March to curb the spread of the COVID-19 illness, people filled the bridge, a landmark that runs between historic Prague quarters on the banks of the Vltava river. "The bridge is a good metaphor, different people can gather," said Ondrej Kobza, who organised the event. The event "is a kind of celebration, to show that we are not afraid, that we go out and we won't be stuck at home," he said, noting that the dinner was only possible because there were hardly any tourists now. The guests were invited to share among themselves the meals and drinks they brought. The Czech Republic was among the first to implement tough restrictions designed to curb the coronavirus in mid-March. As of Jun 30, the country of 10.7 … [Read more...] about At 500-metre table, Prague citizens see coronavirus out with a dinner

For virus-tamer Merkel, global alliances trumped nationalism

· June 10, 2020 ·

BERLIN: Travelling in convoy through the Chinese city of Wuhan last September, Angela Merkel called a halt. As her party crossed a bridge over the Yangtze river, the German Chancellor wanted to hear about a grand gesture by revolutionary leader Mao Zedong. She posed for a picture on the bridge over the river where, in 1966, Mao joined an annual swim down the river in a symbolic demonstration of his vigour and leadership. It was only a quick photo opportunity, but Merkel and her delegation were visiting what was to become ground zero of a pandemic that has killed more than 400,000 worldwide. That Wuhan visit helped shape Merkel's response to COVID-19, three people close to the chancellor told Reuters. To many in the West, Wuhan is a remote place, renowned for an open-air market where the new coronavirus may have crossed into humans. Merkel saw at first hand a major thoroughfare and busy hub of China's industrial power. If the disease was serious enough to force a metropolis … [Read more...] about For virus-tamer Merkel, global alliances trumped nationalism
