Air pollution claimed approximately 54,000 lives in Delhi in 2020, according to a Greenpeace Southeast Asia analysis of cost to the economy due to air pollution. Six Indian cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Lucknow — feature in the global analysis. Globally, approximately 1,60,000 deaths have been attributed to PM 2.5 air pollution in the five most populous cities — Delhi, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Shanghai and Tokyo. The damage is “equally worrying” in other Indian cities, said the report, released on Thursday. “An estimated 25,000 avoidable deaths in Mumbai in 2020 have been attributed to air pollution. Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad estimated an approximate 12,000, 11,000, and 11,000 avoidable deaths respectively due to polluted air,” it said. The ministry also said tests detected 66,588 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total COVID-19 caseload to 10,324,463. Wednesday also marked the country's 35th day in a row with more than 1,000 deaths. SC sets aside NCDRC order of liability on Tata Motors for defective car
Supreme Court has set aside a National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ( NCDRC ) order, which imposed a liability on Tata Motors for sale of a defective two-year-old car by one of its dealers to a customer. A bench comprising Justices U.U. Lalit, Hemant Gupta and S. Ravindra Bhat said: "Special knowledge of the allegations made by the dealer, and involvement, in an overt or tacit manner, by the appellant (car manufacturer), had to be proved to lay the charge of deficiency of service at its door. In these circumstances, having regard to the nature of the dealer's relationship with the appellant, the latter's omissions and acts could not have resulted in the appellant's liability." The top court noted that unless the manufacturer's knowledge is proved, a decision fastening liability upon the manufacturer would be untenable, given that its relationship with the dealer, in the facts of this case, were on principal-to-principal basis. Drago Corse seals Super GT grid spot with new backer
The presence of the team owned by 2000 GT500 champion Ryo Michigami on the GT300 grid was thrown into doubt last month when Honda's announcement of its plans for the 2021 season made no mention of Drago and its solo NSX GT3. It followed the withdrawal of Modulo's sponsorship, with the Honda subsidiary scaling back its support to just the Nakajima Racing GT500 entry for this year. However, Drago has been able to secure a new sponsor in the form of sofa and cushion company Yogibo, and will return with Michigami and Shogo Mitsuyama sharing driving duties at the wheel of the team's Yokohama-shod NSX. Vietnam’s seafood exports perform swimmingly due to free trade deals
Big target The fishery sector plays an important role in the national economy. Despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, seafood exports reached US$8.4 billion in 2020, a drop of 1.8 percent compared with 2019, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Truong Dinh Hoe, secretary-general of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), said Vietnam’s seafood exports plummeted in the first half of 2020, especially in March and May with a drop of 48 percent and 16 percent compared to the same month in 2019, respectively. By adapting to the new normal and devising response solutions, seafood exports recovered in the second half of the year. Shrimp exports maintained steady growth. With experience in controlling the pandemic and utilization of free trade agreements to which Vietnam is a signatory, seafood exports are expected to increase by 10 percent in 2021 to US$9.4 billion.
