SYDNEY: Josh Hazlewood has sometimes been overshadowed by his fellow members of Australia's bowling attack, but at Adelaide Oval on Saturday (Dec 19) he stepped firmly into the limelight with a blinding spell that humiliated India in the first test. Working in tandem with Pat Cummins, the world's top-ranked bowler, Hazlewood bagged the most economical five-wicket haul by an Australian bowler in 73 years as India were bundled out for 36, their lowest ever innings score. The big quick from rural New South Wales bowled three maidens in his five overs, dismissing Mayank Agarwal, Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha, Ravichandran Ashwin and Hanuma Vihari at the cost of just eight runs. A committed team man, his first instinct was to pay tribute to Cummins for taking the first three wickets, although his partner did report that at one stage Hazlewood cheekily suggested he might take more wickets than concede runs. "(We knew we had) something special going, and I just felt like if we … [Read more...] about Cricket: Hazlewood comes out of the shadows with stunning Adelaide spell

India crumble to record low as quicks fire Australia to victory
REUTERS: Australia crushed India by eight wickets inside three days of the first test at Adelaide Oval on Saturday, skittling the tourists for their lowest innings score in 88 years of test cricket and taking a 1-0 lead in the four-match series. Josh Hazlewood (5-8) and Pat Cummins (4-21) turned a tight day-night test on its head in a devastating spell of pace bowling to open the day, ripping through the much-vaunted Indian batting line-up in less than two hours to dismiss the tourists for 36. Australia's batsmen, playing without pressure, chased down the victory target of 90 runs with some ease, opener Joe Burns giving his confidence a much-needed boost with an unbeaten 51 that included the six which secured victory. If the tourists were shellshocked, the hosts were also taken aback by a turn of events which few would have predicted when India came out to bat with a 62-run lead and nine second-innings wickets in hand. "We were expecting a real dogfight right to the end, … [Read more...] about India crumble to record low as quicks fire Australia to victory
Cricket-From pace spearhead to nightwatchman, Bumrah busy in Adelaide
REUTERS: Jasprit Bumrah found himself in the thick of things on Friday when India's pace spearhead doubled up as the nightwatchman to help his team consolidate their position in the day-night test against Australia in Adelaide. After India folded for a middling 244, the onus was on Bumrah to deny Australia a strong start and the right-arm quick with an unorthodox bowling action did not disappoint. Bumrah trapped both the openers lbw, Matthew Wade with an angling delivery and Joe Burns with a trademark yorker, to trigger a top-order collapse. Australia, reeling at 79-5, eventually were all out for 191 as India eked out a handy if not handsome 53-run first innings lead. Bumrah capped an eventful day by facing 11 balls as the nightwatchman, ducking cleverly and blocking confidently to end with his wicket intact. Team mate Ravichandran Ashwin was not surprised by Bumrah's assured batting. "Jasprit is an extremely competitive cricketer, he really likes to take a battle … [Read more...] about Cricket-From pace spearhead to nightwatchman, Bumrah busy in Adelaide
