MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Long Island’s COVID positivity rate is among the state’s highest, and residents say they’re fed up with a lack of vaccine supply. As CBS2’s Jennifer McLogan reported, they’re demanding streamlined websites to book appointments. Alice Sheehan, 81, of Bohemia, had a vaccination appointment but was turned away after a 45-mile drive to New York City. “Was it a pain in the tail? Yeah,” she told McLogan. “I was on the list. The confirmation number was there. My name was there.” But her zip code was not part of the five boroughs. Some lawmakers are crying foul, because Long Island accepts qualifying New York City residents. “If you look at the vaccine-to-resident ratio, which is a percentage of course, New York City is getting a larger ratio of the vaccine,” said Nassau County Legislator John Ferretti. Hot in the city: Rising night temperatures a potentially major health issue in Asian metropolises
BANGKOK: Prasert Saisamphan’s home used to be a breezy space, surrounded by trees. Now, the 65-year-old finds it hard to breathe, surrounded by confining concrete and the dust of a growing city. “When I was about 20 years old, condominiums were not built here yet. The weather was nice and cool. We only used a fan in the evening. No one had an air-conditioner in my house,” he said. “Now, there’s less air. It feels like I can’t take a deep breath.” The view from Prasert’s house in Klong Khlang in central Bangkok is dominated by the towering pylons of an expressway, and in the distance, seemingly ever-growing residential towers. “It’s hot this year. It’s so hot that the electricity charges significantly rise. It’s so hot that I installed water sprinklers on the roof. It’s so hot that I need water spray. It feels doubly hot compared to last year,” said Jurairat Kruephimai, another local resident. The heat they feel is not imagined. The effect of a phenomenon known as the … [Read more...] about Hot in the city: Rising night temperatures a potentially major health issue in Asian metropolises

Cross Island Line to take direct route under Central Catchment Nature Reserve
SINGAPORE: The Cross Island Line (CRL) will take a direct route under the Central Catchment Nature Reserve (CCNR), the Ministry of Transport (MOT) announced on Wednesday (Dec 4). This comes after years of debate and consultation over the routes Singapore’s longest MRT line would take. Nature groups and environmentalists had previously raised concerns that the direct route - which will include a 2km tunnel under the CCNR - could have an impact on Singapore's wildlife and nature. The other route considered was a 9km stretch skirting the reserve and going under homes and businesses. READ: Six years in the making - how the Cross Island Line's direct route was decided "After in-depth studies of the two underground alignment options for the stretch of the Cross Island Line in the vicinity of the Central Catchment Nature Reserve and extensive public consultations with various stakeholders, the Government has studied the trade-offs and selected on the direct alignment … [Read more...] about Cross Island Line to take direct route under Central Catchment Nature Reserve
