Canada looks set for a fight over US$758 million compensation for Huawei gear
OTTAWA: Canada is signalling it might not compensate major telecommunications providers if the federal government bans equipment made by China's Huawei from 5G networks, setting up a potential fight over a bill that could hit C$1 billion (US$758 million). Canada, under pressure from the United States to ban Huawei Technologies gear on security grounds, is studying whether to allow the firm into the country's next-generation 5G networks. If Ottawa does announce a formal ban, the affected companies have made clear they want compensation for tearing out their existing Huawei gear, said two sources close to the matter. But the Liberal government, already pressing wireless providers to cut what it says are excessively high bills, seems less convinced. "I'm not sure there is a solid legal case that we would have to compensate for making a proper national security decision," said a government source who requested anonymity given the sensitivity of the situation. Exclusive: Tesla in talks to buy low carbon nickel from Canada – sources
LONDON: Tesla is in discussions with Canadian miner Giga Metals about helping to develop a large mine that would give the electric carmaker access to low carbon nickel for its batteries, three sources familiar with the matter said. Alongside its goal to reduce pollution from driving, Tesla is also striving to reduce its own carbon footprint. "Tesla will give you a giant contract for a long period of time if you mine nickel efficiently and in an environmentally sensitive way," CEO Elon Musk said in July. Giga Metals's low carbon nickel plans include turning waste from its mining operations into cement type rock using carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and using hydropower. Giga Metals's President Martin Vydra declined to comment on any talks with Tesla, but said: "Giga is actively engaged, and has been for some time, with automakers regarding our ability to produce carbon neutral nickel. "The cost of developing our project, excluding bringing hydroelectric power to the site, … [Read more...] about Exclusive: Tesla in talks to buy low carbon nickel from Canada – sources

Canada to extend rent-relief program for small businesses: Report
TORONTO: The Canadian government will extend its coronavirus rent-relief program for small businesses into September, the Globe and Mail reported late on Saturday (Sep 5), citing sources familiar with the policy discussions. Officials in the government are also working on options to reform the program, the website reported, adding that the extension of the program was meant to be an interim measure. No-one was immediately available to verify the report. The Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance Program offered loans to landlords of entrepreneurs worth half the tenant's rent from April through August, if tenants pay a quarter and the landlord absorbs the remaining quarter. However, the program requires landlords to apply, which has prompted low uptake and left many tenants powerless to get relief as their landlords refuse to make applications. Canada had also rolled out the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) to offer broad support to the millions of Canadians who … [Read more...] about Canada to extend rent-relief program for small businesses: Report
