‘No one has forgotten about Black Lives Matter’, Archer tells Holding

· September 14, 2020 ·

REUTERS: England fast bowler Jofra Archer has said they have not forgotten about the 'Black Lives Matter' movement after former West Indies bowler Michael Holding criticised the country's board (ECB) when players stopped taking a knee before matches. England and West Indies players took a knee before each game in their three-test series in July but the symbolic gesture was discontinued for the Pakistan series as well as the two limited overs series against Australia. The ECB had released a statement justifying their decision to stop taking a knee which was described as 'lame' by Holding, who also took issue with Australian captain Aaron Finch's statements when the visitors said they would not take a knee. "We have not forgotten, no one here has forgotten about 'Black Lives Matter'," Archer said. "I think it is a bit harsh for Michael Holding to not do some research before criticising. I'm pretty sure he doesn't know what is going on behind the scenes. "I don't think he has … [Read more...] about ‘No one has forgotten about Black Lives Matter’, Archer tells Holding

New StatCan data shows how Canada is failing new generations of Black youth

· February 29, 2020 ·

If statistical data tell us stories in numerical form, new information from StatCan depicts Canada as a nation that’s continuing to fail its Black youth. It also shows that the commonly accepted narrative that immigrants fare better with successive generations simply may not hold true for all immigrant groups. While these outcomes will not come as a surprise to those who have long observed and studied Black experiences, they make the implications of Statistics Canada’s conclusions inescapable. “The persistent gaps between the Black population and the rest of the population suggest that other factors not measured by the data used, including discrimination, could have an effect,” concludes Martin Turcotte in the study, titled “Education and Labour Market Integration of Black Youth in Canada.” It was published this week in the journal Insights on Canadian Society and is based on information from the 2006 and 2016 censuses. The study compares Black Canadian youth with non-Black … [Read more...] about New StatCan data shows how Canada is failing new generations of Black youth

Black and Indigenous people less likely to trust Toronto police, survey finds

· May 29, 2019 ·

There are “striking” differences in Torontonians’ perceptions of police depending on their race, with Black and Indigenous residents showing the lowest levels of trust in the city’s officers, according to a newly released survey commissioned by the civilian police board. The survey found 50 per cent of Black respondents believe officers discriminated against them because of their ethnic background, and its results show a “very clear” association between carding and the public’s perception of Toronto police officers, its authors state. Overall, 68 per cent of those surveyed believe the city’s police officers are honest. But that approval rating changes once broken down by race: while 72 per cent of white respondents said police were honest, just 41 per cent of Black and just over half of Indigenous people agreed. “Blacks and some other minority groups clearly do not view the city’s law enforcement officers in the same light as their white/Caucasian peers,” write survey authors … [Read more...] about Black and Indigenous people less likely to trust Toronto police, survey finds

Black man Jacob Blake shot in back by police in Wisconsin city, says governor

· August 24, 2020 ·

MILWAUKEE: Wisconsin's governor on Monday (Aug 24) deployed his state's National Guard to Kenosha following a night of sometimes-violent unrest that came after police in the lakeside city shot a Black man multiple times in the back. Governor Tony Evers also called a special legislative session to take up a package of bills aimed at addressing problems with law enforcement following the shooting of 29-year-old Jacob Blake late Sunday afternoon. Blake's three sons saw the shooting, a lawyer for the family said. After being rushed to a hospital, Blake was out of surgery and in stable condition, his father told news media on Monday. In a video taken by a bystander across the street from the shooting, Blake can be seen walking toward the driver's side of a gray SUV followed by two officers with their guns drawn at his back. Seven gunshot sounds can be heard as Blake, who appears to be unarmed, opens the car door, and a woman nearby jumps up and down in disbelief. It was unknown … [Read more...] about Black man Jacob Blake shot in back by police in Wisconsin city, says governor

Seven new faces in Foster’s first All Blacks squad

· September 6, 2020 ·

WELLINGTON: New All Blacks coach Ian Foster has started his rebuild for the 2023 Rugby World Cup with seven new faces in his first squad although the team has yet to have any matches confirmed for this year. Loose forwards Hoskins Sotutu and Cullen Grace, locks Quinten Strange and Tupou Vaa'i, prop Alex Hodgman and outside backs Caleb Clarke and Will Jordan were named on Sunday in the squad. Prop Karl Tu'inukuafe and outside back Damian McKenzie have also earned recalls after battling with injury last year, while uncapped loose forward Akira Ioane and hooker Asafo Aumua have also forced their way back into the squad. Both Ioane and Aumua have played non-test matches. Flyhalf Josh Ioane, who made his test debut off the bench last year, was not included with McKenzie expected to cover the position if Beauden Barrett or Richie Mo'unga get injured, All Blacks selector Grant Fox said. The All Blacks are tentatively scheduled to play Australia in test matches next month and … [Read more...] about Seven new faces in Foster’s first All Blacks squad
