Commentary: How Hong Kong protesters have been dominating the battle for public space

· August 6, 2019 ·

BRISBANE: The battle for domination of the physical and digital public realms has been crucial to the fortunes of the Hong Kong protesters. Their overwhelming numbers in the tense stand-off has captured our attention over the past eight weeks. However, there are less obvious dynamics at work as protesters use public space – both physical and digital – to maintain their advantage. Hong Kong protesters have drawn the world’s attention to the fragile state of play in this Special Administrative Region of China. As many as 2 million people, out of a population of 7.5 million, have poured into the streets, protesting the erosion of their special status. READ: How did Hong Kong, my home, turn into a war zone? A commentary These protests have been remarkably effective in the face of a stubborn Hong Kong leadership, which has for now backed down on a contentious proposal to make it easier to extradite Hong Kong residents to mainland China. In physical terms the public … [Read more...] about Commentary: How Hong Kong protesters have been dominating the battle for public space

I put the Android 12 beta on my daily driver Pixel 5 and it’s nearly flawless

Hayato Huseman 3 Mar 2021 0 Source: Hayato Huseman / Android Central I've never been one to use or recommend unfinished software on personal phones — at least, not since I stopped habitually rooting my phones back in college. But I've been using the Pixel 5 almost daily since the initial review period, and even after installing the first Android 12 developer preview build for hands-on coverage, I haven't wanted to put it down; if you ask me, it's one of the best Android phones around. Of course, I expected that sentiment to quickly change as I inevitably ran into dozens of show-stopping bugs that made my phone of choice nearly unusable — but to my surprise, that hasn't really happened yet. In fact, everything's been running so smoothly that I've forgotten at times that I'm even running … [Read more...] about I put the Android 12 beta on my daily driver Pixel 5 and it’s nearly flawless

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge Looks Like the Future

· September 3, 2014 ·

When it comes to gadget reporting, the word "futuristic" is overused. But Samsung 's Galaxy Note Edge smartphone, which brandishes a thin, curved screen along the right side, definitely qualifies for the label. The Galaxy Note Edge isn't like anything we've seen before. Sure, there have been curved screens, but those are models where the whole screen is curved, not just the edge. The Galaxy Edge is basically two screens in one: a gorgeous main Quad HD display (2,560 x 1,440) that's identical to the one on the Galaxy Note 4, and a thin strip populated with icons, widgets or useful information. See also: What to Expect at IFA 2014: Smartwatches, TVs and More In my hands-on with the Galaxy Note Edge, I found it worked surprisingly well. It's intuitive to use, and it has very good detection for "false positives" — I hardly ever accidentally activated it with a stray fingertip. You can easily swipe through its various screens, including a news ticker, S Health data (like steps … [Read more...] about Samsung Galaxy Note Edge Looks Like the Future

The 12-month journey to settle Aston Martin’s new F1 livery

· March 3, 2021 ·

The green and black livery– with those streaks of pink – is certain to stand out when battle commences in Bahrain later this month. But equally, the unveiling marked the end of a long journey that Aston Martin has made in coming up with the exact colours that will carry the British sportscar manufacturer's return to F1. For while it has been known for several months now that Aston Martin wanted to use British racing green for its 2021 challenger, settling down on the specific green was never going to be the work of the moment. Time and again we have seen teams get their livery colours out of kilter: making them work in real life but being a flop on television or in photographs. That is why, as Aston Martin's creative officer Marek Reichman has explained, the final choice on the exact type of green used was something that needed a lot of thought put in to. "It's been a long journey actually," explained Reichman, who has designed Aston Martin's road cars for the … [Read more...] about The 12-month journey to settle Aston Martin’s new F1 livery
