LONDON: There is some good news about Brexit. The magic eye picture of Britain’s policy is beginning to emerge from the random pixels of the referendum campaign’s promises and threats to a shadowy image of compromise. But there are three problems: Parliament is looking at the picture from a different angle to the government; the picture is still more of a blur than a portrait; and time is running out fast. FLOORSHOW ON MONDAY In parliament on Monday (Apr 1), the speaker – in the face of some criticism from Brexiteers – made the day’s proceedings a floorshow for the resistance. MPs were to undertake a second round of indicative votes to show which options they would support. Conservative backbencher Kenneth Clarke sought a customs union; his colleague Nick Boles proposed the “Common Market 2.0”, which effectively amounted to staying in the single market. Two more options proposed another referendum and stopping the whole Brexit process if there is no deal. All four options … [Read more...] about Commentary: Finally, some good news about Brexit

‘Was it Worth it?’: Hungary Chides EU For Intransigence That Led to Brexit
European elites that mourn the loss of Britain — and the nation’s significant financial contributions — from the bloc have themselves to blame, Hungarian leader Viktor Orban has said in a wide-ranging interview with the German press. While the British people voted to leave the European Union, it was the Eurocrats in Brussels steering the project whose choices had left the British feeling they had no choice but to go their own way, Orban said. Responding to a question by a journalist from German magazine FOCUS , asking him to elaborate on historic comments he made saying that Brexit could have been avoided , the Hungarian Prime Minister was clear that while the European Union could probably get away with pushing around less powerful nations, a leading state like the UK would inevitably decide to do something about it. Commentary: How the UK is playing dirty in Brexit talks
YORK, England: The UK government seems to be doubling down on threats to leave the European Union without a deal unless the EU gives in on issues of state aid and fisheries. These two concerns are as important in Brussels as they seem to be in London. In the latest attempt to ramp up the drama as the deadline to reach an agreement nears, the UK has said it plans to revisit the withdrawal agreement it has already signed with the EU on the terms of departure. This will include changing the plan agreed with the EU in December 2019 on how trade will move between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. It also sets out how much money the UK owes the EU in unpaid commitments. Salmond Evidence Was Compelling – Conspirators Fear the Truth
With dignity, intellect, sincerity, and the energy of a man half his 66 years of age he sailed through a six-hour session of questioning in front of nine hostile politicians on the specially convened committee established to examine the Scottish Government handling of harassment complaints against him in 2017/2018. From start to finish his command of facts, dates, and complex legal issues was outstanding. Love him or loathe him, Alex Salmond made an unassailable case that he has indeed been a victim of a fit-up, a conspiracy, designed to destroy and imprison him: "It has been a matter of considerable public interest whether there was 'a conspiracy'. I have never adopted the term but note that the Cambridge English Dictionary defines it as 'the activity of secretly planning with other people to do something bad or illegal'. I leave to others the question of what is, or is not, a conspiracy but am very clear in my position that the evidence supports a deliberate, prolonged, … [Read more...] about Salmond Evidence Was Compelling – Conspirators Fear the Truth
Scotland’s Sturgeon wants independence referendum as soon as 2021
LONDON: Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon said on Friday (Nov 27) an independence referendum that could wrench apart the United Kingdom after Brexit should take place in the earlier part of the devolved parliament's next term, which begins next year. If there was another referendum and if Scots voted out, it would mark the biggest shock to the United Kingdom since Irish independence a century ago - just as London grapples with the impact of Brexit. READ: Time is running out for Brexit deal, EU tells Britain The pro-independence Scottish National Party leader said she anticipates that a vote will take place "in the earlier part" of the next Scottish parliament, which begins next year. "The referendum for a whole variety of reasons should be in the earlier part of the next parliament," Scottish First Minister Sturgeon told the BBC. Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence in a 2014 referendum but both Brexit and the British government's handling of the … [Read more...] about Scotland’s Sturgeon wants independence referendum as soon as 2021
