The gutsy little theater on East 4th Street, just in recent seasons, has produced shows like Slave Play, Once , and Hadestown, all of which later traveled uptown to play successfully on Broadway. Its primary impact on the theatrical Zeitgeist, though, struck way back in 1996, with the super-blockbuster Rent , Jonathan Larson’s rock adaptation of Puccini’s La Bohème. To celebrate the show’s silver anniversary, NYTW organized its annual fundraising benefit as a kind of birthday celebration. Between solicitations for donations, it invited current workshop collaborators to talk about Rent ’s impact on their work, Zoomed with old cast and crew members to share their memories of making the show, and presented new interpretations of a few Rent songs by the current crop of Broadway stars. Superhero action movie Aquaman has already made US$260 million (S$357 million) at international box offices, reigning as the number one movie globally for two weeks. This is in spite of the film not having opened in the US, where it has a Dec 21 premiere date. The movie has raked in the most takings in China – a cool US$189 million – where it is now the fourth highest-grossing superhero film of all time and the second-highest-grossing Warner Bros film ever. Aquaman is the epic story of Arthur Curry, played by Jason Momoa, the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, who must protect his people against his half-brother, Orm. SINGAPORE: In Rwanda, being caught with a plastic bag is a crime. The African nation is so serious about tackling the global plastic pollution crisis that since a decade ago, it is illegal to import, produce, use or sell plastic bags and plastic packaging except for specific industries such as healthcare and pharmaceuticals. Those caught carrying illegal plastic are liable to be fined, jailed or forced to make public confessions, the New York Times reported last year. In 2017, another African nation, Kenya, also enacted a law to punish anyone making, selling or importing plastic bags with as much as four years in jail or a US$19,000 (S$26,140) fine. While their measures to combat plastic pollution are not as drastic compared to Rwanda or Kenya, more than 40 countries the world over including China, the United Kingdom, Australia and Malaysia have banned, restricted or taxed the use of single-use plastics. An article in the Daily Mail on Thursday (Dec 13) reported that Dax Shepard and Julie Andrews’ granddaughter Kayti Edwards had spent a “passionate” night together when he was two years into his relationship with Kristen Bell, who is now his wife. Shepard and Bell met in 2007 and married in 2013. They have two daughters together, Lincoln, five, and Delta, three. According to the Daily Mail, Shepard and Edwards first met in 2005 and had gone on a few dates but the relationship didn’t take off. It was a chance meeting at a Hollywood party in late 2009 when the fling began. “There was a photo booth and I remember people were standing in line for this photo booth. And Dax grabbed me and was like, ‘Let’s pick this up where we left off’, and he threw me into this photo booth with him,” she alleged.
