PARIS: Police said they arrested 148 people as Paris Saint-Germain fans set cars ablaze and clashed with police on the Champs-Elysees in the French capital after the Champions League final defeat to Bayern Munich on Sunday (Aug 23). Around 5,000 supporters had gathered at Paris's Parc des Princes to cheer on PSG, lighting flares and chanting as they watched the 1-0 defeat in Lisbon on a big screen. After scuffles at the ground, late-night clashes erupted on the Champs-Elysees, where vehicles were set on fire, windows broken and shops vandalised. Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo had called for "mature celebrations" should PSG beat Bayern, after supporters clashed with police following their 3-0 win over RB Leipzig in the semi-finals. Social distancing measures went out of the window inside and outside the Parc des Princes among fans who had hoped to see their Qatar-owned team's first triumph in Europe's top club competition. And there were exchanges between fans and police … [Read more...] about 148 arrested as PSG fans rampage after Champions League final defeat: Paris police

Scuffles with police in Paris as fans gather for soccer final
PARIS: Police in Paris clashed briefly with crowds outside the Paris St Germain soccer stadium as the Champions' League final against Bayern Munich got underway on Sunday, while people were turfed out of some bars for not respecting social distancing rules. Soccer fans gathered in bars and restaurants in the French capital on Sunday evening to watch the game, being played in Lisbon, amid concerns over the protective measures being taken as coronavirus infections tick up in France. Government officials had urged people to wear masks in public before the game, and several bars were closed. More than 200 people were cautioned by police for not wearing face-coverings, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Twitter. Earlier in the evening, people threw projectiles at police vehicles outside the Parc des Princes stadium in Paris and were dispersed with tear gas, video footage on social media showed. Paris is ‘red’ high-risk COVID-19 zone again: French government decree
PARIS: The French government has declared Paris and the Bouches-du-Rhone area around Marseille on the Mediterranean coast as "red" zones with a high coronavirus infection risk, according to a government decree published on Friday (Aug 14). The decree gives local authorities the power to limit the circulation of people and vehicles, to restrict the access to public transport and air travel, to limit the access to public buildings and to close some establishments where there is a high risk of infection. The measure follows a sharp increase in COVID-19 infections over the past two weeks. Paris and Marseille had in recent days already made the wearing of face masks mandatory in busy public areas. Paris orders mandatory wearing of masks outdoors in busy areas as COVID-19 flares back
PARIS: Parisians and holidaymakers strolling along the banks of the River Seine or browsing open-air markets in Paris must wear a face mask from Monday (Aug 10) after authorities imposed new measures to curb a rise in coronavirus infections. The order, which applies to people aged 11 and over, covers busy outdoor areas in the French capital, although tourist sites such as the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe and Champs-Elysees boulevard were not listed. Data showed the virus had begun circulating more widely in Paris and its lower-income suburbs since mid-July. The rate of positive tests in the greater Paris region now stood at 2.4 per cent compared with a national average of 1.6 per cent, it said. After tough lockdown measures slowed infection rates, many European countries are now watching new clusters flare up after easing restrictions to try to limit the economic damage and alleviate public frustration. France has made it compulsory to wear a face mask in closed public … [Read more...] about Paris orders mandatory wearing of masks outdoors in busy areas as COVID-19 flares back
Global warming trends highlight ‘enormous challenge’ of meeting Paris climate pledge: WMO
GENEVA: Global temperatures will continue to warm over the next five years, and may even temporarily rise to more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Thursday (Jul 9). That does not mean the world would be crossing the long-term warming threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius, which scientists have set as the ceiling for avoiding catastrophic climate change. But it does show the warming trend continuing apace, underlining the "enormous challenge" the world faces in meeting the 2015 Paris Agreement's goal of curbing climate-warming emissions enough to keep the rise in temperatures “well below” 2 degrees Celsius, said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas. The WMO said there was a 20 per cent chance that average annual temperatures, which fluctuate from year to year, could hit the 1.5 degree Celsius mark in any year between 2020 and 2024. Meanwhile, each of those years is "likely" to be at least 1 degree Celsius above … [Read more...] about Global warming trends highlight ‘enormous challenge’ of meeting Paris climate pledge: WMO
