SINGAPORE: On Tuesday (Mar 31), an 86-year-old woman residing at the Lee Ah Mooi Old Age Home in Thomson Lane tested positive for COVID-19 – the first case found in a nursing home in Singapore. The next day, it became a cluster of 11 cases, including a 102-year-old woman who was a resident at the home. Seniors and those with chronic conditions are more likely to develop serious illness after being infected by the virus, said the World Health Organization (WHO). While the number of clusters and local cases have risen in Singapore recently, this is the first group of cases concentrated at a nursing home. Case 983, a 102-year-old woman, is the oldest COVID-19 patient reported in Singapore so far. She is one of the nine residents infected, all Singaporean women aged between 52 and 102 (Cases 918, 983, 984, 985, 986, 987, 988, 989 and 990). A staff member, a 42-year-old Indian woman who is a Singapore work pass holder, was identified by the Ministry of Health (MOH) as Case … [Read more...] about 102-year-old woman among those infected with COVID-19 at Lee Ah Mooi nursing home

All residents and staff at nursing homes to be tested for COVID-19, some employees to be housed on-site or at hotels
SINGAPORE: All residents and employees at nursing homes and other such facilities serving the elderly will be tested for COVID-19, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) and Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) in a joint news release on Saturday (May 2). The additional measure covers nursing homes, welfare homes, sheltered homes and adult disability homes. “Homes serve highly vulnerable and frail seniors, who are at higher risk of developing serious health complications if infected with COVID-19," said the ministries. "MOH and MSF will therefore prioritise testing for residents and staff in all homes serving the elderly," they added. “This will ensure that any COVID-19 infections in the homes are detected as early as possible for treatment, as well as to limit transmission." Some staff members at Lee Ah Mooi evicted by landlords, says nursing home hit by COVID-19
SINGAPORE: Some staff members from Lee Ah Mooi nursing home, which has a cluster of COVID-19 cases, were evicted by their landlords out of fear that they may carry the virus, the home has said. "While we have provided temporary accommodation for our affected staff, they are not sheltered from the discrimination from people they care about," it said in a statement on Facebook on Friday. "It inevitably affects their mental well-being in fighting this long drawn out battle." When asked for more details, the home declined to comment further. In February, authorities had said that landlords who evict tenants who are on home quarantine orders or leave of absence may be penalised. COVID-19: California desperately searches for more nurses and doctors
SAN FRANCISCO: Since the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in the US, Sara Houze has been on the road — going from one hospital to another to care for COVID-19 patients on the brink of death. A cardiac intensive care nurse from Washington, DC, with expertise in heart rhythm, airway and pain management, her skills are in great demand as infections and hospitalisations skyrocket nationwide. Houze is among more than 500 nurses, doctors and other medical staff California has brought in and deployed to hospitals that are running out of capacity to treat the most severe COVID-19 cases. Her six-week assignment started on Monday in San Bernardino, about 97km east of Los Angeles, and she anticipates working 14-hour shifts with a higher-than-usual caseload. San Bernardino County has 1,545 people in hospitals and more than 125 are in makeshift “surge" beds, which are being used because regular hospital space isn't available. “I expect patients to die. That’s been my experience: They die, I … [Read more...] about COVID-19: California desperately searches for more nurses and doctors
US existing home sales fall more than expected in November
WASHINGTON: US home sales fell more than expected in November after five straight month of gains amid a shortage of properties and more expensive houses, but the housing market remains underpinned by record low mortgage rates. The National Association of Realtors said on Tuesday that existing home sales fell 2.5 per cent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 6.69 million units last month. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast sales declining 1.0 per cent to a rate of 6.70 million units in November. Existing home sales, which account for the bulk of US home sales, surged 25.8 per cent on a year-on-year basis in November. Sales fell in the South, Midwest and Northeast. They were flat in the West. The housing market has been the economy's star performer, thanks to pent-up demand and historically low mortgage rates. The COVID-19 pandemic has left 21.8 per cent of the labour force working from home. That has led to a migration from city centres to suburbs and other … [Read more...] about US existing home sales fall more than expected in November
