Mac OS X market share is growing nicely around the world with some pretty impressive numbers in North America, Oceania, and parts of Europe. As a continent, North America takes the cake at 14.09%, which isn’t too surprising considering it is the home of Apple. Next up is Oceania (Australia & New Zealand) at 13.71%. Europe as a whole is at a somewhat low 6%, but looking at specific countries gives a very different picture; Switzerland tops off everywhere in the world with a 17.61% Mac market share, followed by Luxembourg with 15.79%, Iceland at 15.18%, Norway with 12.14%, and Denmark’s 11.71%. The entire Asian market share is a low 1.61%, but when you consider the continents tremendous population size that might not be as low in real numbers as it sounds. Evidence of that is in countries like Singapore, where the Mac market share is 10.69%. I’m in the midst of planning a summer vacation to a couple of countries that are more than a couple of time zones away. Lots of the activities I want to do are kind of off the beaten path, and booking online isn’t always an option. That means I have to resort to the primitive telephone to make tour and hostel reservations, which has me asking, “What time is it in Finland? Is that the same time zone as Western Norway? Or Iceland?” a little too often. That’s why Globo has been an instrumental help. This clock app displays the current time in cities around the world in a neat, beautiful list that you build yourself. NEW YORK: Limiting air pollution to levels recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) could prevent more than 50,000 deaths in Europe annually, according to research published Wednesday that called for urgent action. The WHO estimates that air pollution kills more than 7 million people each year and is one of the leading causes of sickness and absenteeism globally. Cities, with their crowded streets and high energy use, are hotspots for illness and disease linked to air pollution. The WHO recommends that fine particulate matter (PM2.5) not exceed 10 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) of air, averaged annually. For nitrous oxide (NO2), the threshold not to be exceeded is 40 mg/m3. Wednesday’s study, published in the Lancet Planetary Health journal, estimated the premature death burden because of these two pollutants in nearly 1,000 cities across Europe.
