Illustrative image (Photo: VNA) Bac Lieu (VNA) - The Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu has adopted a wide range of measures to raise awareness and legal understanding among local fishermen about preventing and fighting illegal fishing . The provincial fisheries industry has witnessed strong development over recent years, contributing significantly to increasing incomes for fishermen. But legal violations in fishing activities remain common. According to Tran Xi Khuol, Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Fisheries, fishing has been considered a key economic sector of Bac Lieu for many years. But problems linger, such as illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, especially fishing without permits, a lack of safety equipment on fishing vessels, and fishing reports not being submitted in line with regulations. Though patrols have been carried out regularly, violations have not been handled thoroughly, Khuol said. The main cause of the situation is … [Read more...] about Bac Lieu working hard to fight illegal fishing

Commentary: Droughts and dams are drying up the Mekong river
CANBERRA: It has been a bad year for the Mekong. An unusually long period of drought brought water levels to some of the lowest measurements in recent years. There are fears that the drought will have a particularly negative effect on the Tonle Sap River, connecting the Mekong to Cambodia’s Great Lake and which plays a key role in the maturing of the fish stocks on which population of the Lower Mekong Basin depends. If its normal flood pulse is sharply reduced, minimising the flow of the tributary backwards to the lake, there will be serious negative effects. RECURRENT DROUGHTS Upstream from Cambodia, in Laos there have been complaints about declining fish stocks due to the drought. Droughts have been a recurrent issue for the Mekong over the centuries, reflected especially in Luang Prabang, Laos, in April 2009, when the section of the riverbed through which water was flowing had been diminished to a width of about 10m. Hard to make catch-and-release fishing compulsory, say NParks, anglers after giant ray cut up
SINGAPORE: Visit Bedok Jetty in the heart of East Coast Park on any day of the week, and chances are you will find recreational anglers trying to land the biggest catch of their lives. Some will release anything they catch, as the thrill of their hobby is all about the challenge of hooking a fish and reeling it in, then weighing it and taking a picture. For others, their catch could end up in the boiling waters of a soup pot, rather than back in the salty ocean waters surrounding Singapore. The difference in approaches to catching fish was in the spotlight recently after a honeycomb whipray estimated to weigh 80kg was caught at Bedok Jetty on Jul 30 before being cut up and distributed as the makings of a tasty dish. Several members of the public and the animal welfare group Animal Concerns Research and Education Society said the vulnerable species should have been released. But the National Parks Board (NParks), anglers and experts told CNA it would be a challenge to make … [Read more...] about Hard to make catch-and-release fishing compulsory, say NParks, anglers after giant ray cut up
Mekong River Commission urges China to work with it on data-sharing
BANGKOK: A Mekong River advisory body urged China on Tuesday (Aug 25) to work with its experts in sharing year-round data on the lifeline waterway for the first time, rather than Beijing keeping a separate platform under its own new Mekong organisation. Control of the waters is politically sensitive, and many farmers’ and fishermen’s livelihoods depend on the river. A report by a US research company this year accused China of holding back large amounts of water during a drought last year, a finding Beijing disputed. Tuesday's statement by the Mekong River Commission (MRC), which groups Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, followed an assurance by China to share more water management data from its portion of the river with Southeast Asian nations, although details of its pledge were not immediately clear. "Any future data and information to be shared by the MRC member countries under the LMC framework should be developed in close collaboration with the MRC secretariat so … [Read more...] about Mekong River Commission urges China to work with it on data-sharing
New law to better protect China’s Yangtze River takes effect
Video Player Close BEIJING, March 1 (Xinhua) -- The Yangtze River conservation law took effect on Monday amid China's intensified efforts to protect its "mother river." With 96 provisions in nine chapters, it is the country's first legislation on a specific river basin. The new law strengthens oversight as well as the prevention and control of water pollution in the Yangtze River basin. For the economic and social development of the Yangtze River basin, efforts shall be made to promote well-coordinated environmental conservation and avoid excessive development, while ecology shall be prioritized, according to the law. Stretching over 6,300 km, the Yangtze boasts rich biodiversity and mineral and water resources in its basin. But overfishing and pollution have long threatened its aquatic life and depleted its fish stocks. Fishing for productive purposes is banned in the aquatic life conservation areas of the Yangtze basin, the law stipulates, adding that within the time … [Read more...] about New law to better protect China’s Yangtze River takes effect
