Kamala Harris’ stepdaughter makes her modelling debut at New York fashion week

· February 19, 2021 ·

They already knew she looked good in a coat. So the designers at Proenza Schouler decided to dress Ella Emhoff – art student, knitwear designer, fledgling model and stepdaughter of US Vice President Kamala Harris – in a couple of coats (plus a pantsuit) for her modelling debut in their new collection, unveiled Thursday (Feb 18) for New York Fashion Week. Designers Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough said the fashion world took quick notice when 21-year-old Emhoff appeared at the inauguration in January, dressed in a quirky Miu Miu coat with bejeweled shoulders along with a starchy white collar. Social media took notice, too. Soon after, the designers were planning their February show – actually a digital short, for pandemic reasons – and the casting director mentioned Emhoff. “And we said, ‘We were just talking about Ella.’ Seemed like everyone was kind of talking about her,” McCollough said in an interview. As it turns out, Emhoff, a senior and art major at Parsons School … [Read more...] about Kamala Harris’ stepdaughter makes her modelling debut at New York fashion week

Groceries, gowns and Coca-Cola: Jason Wu at New York Fashion Week

· February 16, 2021 ·

Lockdown cooking and casual clothing inspired designer Jason Wu's Autumn-Winter 2021 collection, which his models paraded live at New York Fashion Week on Sunday evening (Feb 14). The creations were dished out in his 1950s-inspired "Mr. Wu's General Store" between rows of fresh produce set up in an empty Broadway shopfront. "During this past year, cooking has proven to be an amazing outlet for me creatively," the Taiwanese-Canadian designer, 38, said in a statement. "The joys that I experience from cooking and spending time with loved ones make me hopeful to celebrate the moments that really matter. This show represents who I am, not only as a designer but as a person." The edible ingredients were donated to City Harvest, a New York charity fighting food insecurity, after the show, one of the few live events in this year's Fashion Week. Wu, who founded his eponymous label in 2007 and rose to global fame as the designer of the gown worn by former first lady Michelle Obama to … [Read more...] about Groceries, gowns and Coca-Cola: Jason Wu at New York Fashion Week

Impeach Andrew Cuomo Billboards Appear in New York Amid COVID, Sexual Harassment Scandals

· February 26, 2021 ·

Billboards calling for the impeachment of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo have appeared along Albany's Interstate 787 in recent days, with the Democrat facing calls to resign amid ongoing scandals. The billboards feature a photo of Cuomo and the word "IMPEACH" in large red letters. They also note that they were paid for by Brian Oleson. He owns an Albany gun shop, American Shooter Supply. Cuomo has faced widespread criticism after revelations that New York had underreported COVID-19 deaths in the state's nursing homes. Separately, a former aide has accused him of sexual harassment. Local media reported that Oleson explained his reasons for putting up the billboards in a Facebook post. "Cuomo failed to correct a policy that guaranteed horrific results," the shopowner wrote. Newsweek couldn't find Oleson's original post at the time of writing but a local Facebook page based in the state's Columbia County suggested Oleson's account had been suspended from the social media … [Read more...] about Impeach Andrew Cuomo Billboards Appear in New York Amid COVID, Sexual Harassment Scandals

Amazon sues New York attorney general to preempt COVID-19 lawsuit

· February 13, 2021 ·

REUTERS: Amazon.com Inc on Friday sued New York's attorney general to stop the state from filing its own lawsuit over the online retailer's early response to COVID-19, including its firing of activist Christian Smalls. In a complaint in Brooklyn federal court, Amazon accused Attorney General Letitia James of overstepping her bounds by threatening to sue unless it met several demands including surrendering some profit and slowing down operations. Amazon said federal labor and safety laws take precedence over New York's, and is seeking an injunction to block James from suing. The Seattle-based retailer had drawn scrutiny 10 months ago when workers protested conditions at a Staten Island warehouse, and Amazon fired Smalls for violating a paid quarantine. James said at the time that Amazon may have broken the law. New York City announced its own probe, and senators questioned Amazon's actions. In a statement, James said she is still reviewing her legal options. She … [Read more...] about Amazon sues New York attorney general to preempt COVID-19 lawsuit
