GENEVA: While much of Switzerland is preparing for tighter lockdown restrictions because of COVID-19, the country's French-speaking regions are going in the other direction - allowing restaurants to reopen on Thursday after a drop in cases from one of the world’s highest rates of infection roughly a month ago. Authorities in five cantons, or regions, around the cities of Geneva and Lausanne are allowing restaurants to reopen, under strict conditions. PARIS: The European Union is still hoping to reach a deal with Switzerland about having a level-playing field over the opening of ski resorts in the region, France's junior Minister of European Affairs, Clement Beaune, said on Tuesday. Switzerland has allow ski resorts to remain open for domestic tourism, taking a different path from neighbours Italy, France and Germany which are keeping winter sports under wraps over the holiday period in a bid to control the pandemic. "Concerning Switzerland, talks are ongoing. It's the sole point where coordination is not quite there yet. But we're talking to Swiss authorities to avoid any type of unfair competition", Beaune told RMC radio. GENEVA: Two young Swiss men were arrested near Zurich on Tuesday (Nov 3) in connection with the deadly shooting rampage in Vienna, Swiss police said. "Police investigations led to the identification of an 18-year-old and a 24-year-old Swiss citizen," Zurich police said in a statement, adding that the two men had been arrested Tuesday afternoon in the northeastern town of Winterthur "in coordination with the Austrian authorities". "The extent to which there is a connection between the two people arrested and the alleged assassin is currently the subject of investigation," the statement said. LONDON: Ukraine's Nations League game against Switzerland on Tuesday has been cancelled after the entire Ukraine team was placed in quarantine following positive COVID-19 tests within the squad, the Ukraine Association of Football (UAF) said on Tuesday. Three Ukraine players - Eduard Sobol, Yevhen Makarenko and Dmytro Riznyk - tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Monday. UEFA told UAF that the Department of Health of the Canton of Lucerne had quarantined the entire delegation from Ukraine so the match was off, UAF said in a statement. "UEFA, UAF and the Swiss Football Association are ready for the match, but the ban (by) local authorities cancels all hopes of football organizations to hold the game," it said.
