‘Shortcomings of Greater Nature’: Danish Chief of Defence Says Country is Vulnerable to Airstrikes

· March 1, 2021 ·

The Danish military's toolbox is empty when it comes to being able to defend the country against attacks from above, the country's Chief of Defence Flemming Lentfer told Danish Radio. According to him, both Danish land forces and land areas are largely exposed to aggression from the air. "There is no doubt about that when we look at Denmark's air defence capability, we have some shortcomings", General Flemming Lentfer, who is both Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and the Minister of Defence and the government's top military adviser, told Danish Radio. "Some of the shortcomings that have been pointed out in terms of air defence are of a greater nature", Lentfer added. Denmark currently has two F-16s on duty around-the-clock to fend off uninvited guests from the country's airspace. However, apart from the ageing fighter jets, the country has no means to defend itself against a massive attack from the air: no missiles that can shoot down bombers, jet fighters, or even … [Read more...] about ‘Shortcomings of Greater Nature’: Danish Chief of Defence Says Country is Vulnerable to Airstrikes

New species of orchid native to Singapore discovered in Bukit Timah Reserve

· June 19, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: A new species of orchid native and endemic to Singapore was discovered last year by researchers from the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The species, Nervilia singaporensis, was found in July 2019 at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, said the National Parks Board (NParks) in a news release on Friday (Jun 19). The genus Nervilia was, until recently, thought to be locally extinct in Singapore, with the last sighting in 1889. With this discovery, Singapore now has five species of endemic plants, with four existing only in the nature reserves. The Nervilia singaporensis has a unique flower shape that is oblong with a truncate tip and flowers that never open. This means it must self-pollinate in order to reproduce. This species, which grows up to 9cm tall, is "considered highly endangered at national and global levels" because it only produces a low quantity of seeds, making it difficult to propagate, said NParks. Are you planning to use thick needle, Modi had asked nurse

· March 1, 2021 ·

Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the nurses administering the COVID-19 vaccine to him on Monday whether they were planning to use some special thick needle as politicians are known to be 'very thick-skinned', drawing laughter from the medical staff who immediately felt at ease. Photograph: Press Information Bureau Prime Minister Modi took his first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. Nurse P Niveda, who hails from Puducherry, administered Bharat Biotech's COVAXIN to the prime minister, sources said. Another nurse, Rosamma Anil, was also there to assist in the vaccine administering process. "When Prime Minister Modi arrived early in the morning, it was natural that the medical staff at AIIMS was perhaps a bit overawed by the situation," a source said. Realising this, the prime minister instantly … [Read more...] about Are you planning to use thick needle, Modi had asked nurse

A masterstroke that keeps demand for Rolex watches sky-high

· February 28, 2021 ·

Rolex has been masterful at playing the demand-supply game, limiting its issue of coveted and in-demand watches to only one or two pieces per dealership. IMAGE: Rolex Datejust watches. Photograph: Arnd Wiegmann/Reuters For watch collectors and horologists alike, shopping trips to Rolex dealerships for the last six months would have been futile. That's because the company, famed for its waterproof watches that never depreciate, clamped down on factory production for three months starting March 2020. The result: Shelves in stores were almost empty with limited products on sale not just in India but across the world. Dealers across the country have less than two or three dozen watches as compared to the 200 to 250 they would normally stock. Did that curb sales enthusiasm or impact the company's brand cache? On the contrary, demand has never been stronger, say authorised dealers in Delhi who requested not to be named. Part of this has to do with Rolex's unique … [Read more...] about A masterstroke that keeps demand for Rolex watches sky-high
