102 Years of Milestones in Women’s History

· March 3, 2021 ·

The feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s reminded the world that women have always played important historical roles, despite often being overlooked. But even in the 21st century, many popular history books are written by and about men —usually covering war heroes, generals, and the country's founding fathers. Women's History Month in March and the commemoration of International Women's Day on March 8 allow us to celebrate the strides women have made across social, economic, political, and cultural spectrums. Observing milestones in women's history also reminds us of the steps still … [Read more...] about 102 Years of Milestones in Women’s History

February. Yes, probably, maybe…

· August 22, 2018 ·

PHOTO: The Nation The Thai PM has endorsed a statement made by Deputy PM Wissanu Krea-ngam over the weekend that February 24 is the first possible date an election can be held. He says there is no justification for a general election to take place before that date. Speaking to reporters after the mobile Cabinet meeting in Chumphorn, the prime minister repeated the comments made over the weekend. “We stand by the February schedule. · February 4, 2021 ·

When services resumed, people were shocked to learn that the military had seized power, detaining the nation’s elected politicians. The takeover was announced in a statement aired on military-owned television, while all other television stations were out of service. Myanmar has experienced two other coups since independence from Britain in 1948. The first in 1962, leading to 26 years of military rule, and the other in 1988 – after nation-wide protests. However, according to those who witnessed the 1988 uprising, the takeover in 2021 is very different. This time there are no protestors on the streets, except for a dozen people flying the nation’s flag, playing military songs and celebrating the Tatmadaw’s takeover.
