North Korean leader Kim Jong-un rides a horse during snowfall in Mount Paektu. PHOTO: REUTERS/FILE SEOUL: The statement came just hours after North Korea announced it would convene a rare gathering of top ruling-party officials later this month, and state media showed photos of leader Kim Jong Un taking a second symbolic horse ride on the country’s sacred Mt. Paektu. US President Donald Trump, in Britain for a Nato summit, said on Tuesday that Washington could use military force against North Korea “if we have to”, though he added he still hoped for talks. Kim was “displeased to hear” those comments, Pak Jong Chon, chief of the General Staff of the Korean People’s Army, said in a statement carried by North Korea’s state news agency KCNA. “I clearly state here that if the US uses any armed forces against the DPRK, we will also take prompt corresponding actions at any level,” Pak said, using the initials of North … [Read more...] about WATCH: Kim Jong Un rides again as North Korea warns US against using military force
Stephen Biegun, the U.S. special representative for North Korea, arrived in Seoul Sunday at a crucial juncture ahead of Pyongyang’s self-imposed year-end deadline for Washington to come up with a new approach. On his three-day visit, Biegun is expected to meet with his South Korean counterpart Lee Do-hoon, the special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs, and pay a courtesy call on President Moon Jae-in at the Blue House Monday. What message Biegun brings from Washington will be closely monitored in Seoul. Biegun usually holds talks with Chung Eui-yong, director of the National Security Office (NSO), or Kim Hyun-chong, second deputy director of the NSO. Moon last met Biegun 15 months ago on Sept. 11, 2018, just before his third summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang. Ahead of Biegun’s visit, North Korea announced Saturday it conducted a second “crucial” test Friday at the Sohae Satellite Launching Ground in … [Read more...] about Biegun arrives as North’s deadline nears
Evocative propaganda images of Kim Jong Un have surfaced, showing the North Korean leader on horseback, Vladimir Putin-style. The images in his country's official media showed a bespectacled Kim, clad in a light brown coat, climbing a snow-covered Mount Paektu on horseback. The location and the animal are both symbols associated with the Kim family's dynastic rule. The highest point on the Korean Peninsula is sacred to North Koreans, and Kim has visited it before making previous major decisions such as the 2013 execution of his powerful uncle and his 2018 entrance into diplomacy with Seoul and Washington. "He, sitting on the horseback atop Mt Paektu, recollected with deep emotion the road of arduous struggle he covered for the great cause of building the most powerful country with faith and will as firm as Mt Paektu," the North's official Korean Central News Agency said.
