PARIS: Monaco extended their unbeaten run to 12 games with a 2-0 win over Brest on Sunday (Feb 28) to move Niko Kovac's in-form side to within three points of the top of Ligue 1. Goals deep into the second half from Stevan Jovetic and Kevin Volland sealed the Principality club's ninth win from their last 10 outings. Monaco climbed level with third-place Lyon on 55 points, with the team they saw off last week, Paris Saint-Germain, two points in front in second behind leaders Lille. Lyon are at crisis-hit Marseille on Sunday evening after Lille host Strasbourg. BERLIN: Striker Kevin Volland has left Bayer Leverkusen to join France's Ligue 1 club AS Monaco on a four-year-contract, the Bundesliga club said on Wednesday. The 28-year-old, who earned 10 caps for Germany between 2014-16, joined Leverkusen four years ago after four years at Hoffenheim. He will meet up with former Bundesliga coach Niko Kovac, who signed for the club in July. "When Kevin now got the opportunity to go to an attractive club abroad, the club granted his wish after a satisfactory agreement for all sides," Leverkusen sports director Simon Rolfes said in a club statement. MONACO: Monaco rallied from two goals down to salvage a point in a 2-2 home draw against Stade de Reims in their first game under new coach Nico Kovac in Ligue 1 on Sunday (Aug 23). Hoping to find some stability after using five coaches in two years, Monaco found themselves trailing 2-0 after 21 minutes following goals by Boulaye Dia and El Bilal Toure. But Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile, who both had a catastrophic start in central defence, scored either way of the interval as Monaco stepped up a gear. Angers, the only team with a win so far, are the early leaders after the 2020-2021 started on Friday. RIO DE JANEIRO: A goal in each half from Nene helped Fluminense to a 2-1 win over Corinthians in Rio on Sunday (Sep 13) and condemned the Sao Paulo side to their second consecutive defeat. The former Monaco and Paris St Germain striker put the home side ahead after eight minutes when he hooked home a cross from a prone position and he doubled their lead when he converted a penalty two minutes from time. Fluminense had Lucas Barcellos sent off in the 90th minute and then Mateus Vital got a goal back for Corinthians but the three points stayed in Rio. The result was Fluminense's first win in four matches and lifted them into eighth place in the Serie A, with 14 points from 10 games. The sport's most successful team, who have made history with the likes of Niki Lauda and Michael Schumacher and been part of the landscape since 1950, are facing their worst season for 40 years.
